Music legend Stevie Wonder kicked off Tuesday’s widely televised benefit for hurricane victims by slamming climate change skeptics as either blind or unintelligent.
Before launching into a rendition of “Lean on Me,” along with the Houston Gospel Choir, Mr. Wonder praised love in action and called on people to “love and value” the planet.
“We’ve come together today to love on the people that have been devastated by the hurricanes,” he said. “When love goes into action, it preferences no color of skin, no ethnicity, no religious beliefs, no sexual preferences and no political persuasions. It just loves, as we should begin to love and value our planet.
“And anyone who believes that there is no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent. Lord, please save us all,” he said.
Mr. Wonder, who supported Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, has been blind almost since birth.
Beyonce, who is from Houston, also spoke out about the topic during the “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief.”
“The effects of climate change are playing out around the world every day,” she said, The Daily Beast reported. “We have to be prepared for what comes next.”
“National disasters don’t discriminate,” she said. “They don’t see if you’re an immigrant, black or white, Hispanic, or Asian, Jewish, or Muslim, rich or poor. It doesn’t matter if you’re from Third Ward or River Oaks, we’re all in this together.”
