Former Vice President Al Gore spent Thursday recruiting climate change warriors in Pittsburgh with former Secretary of State John Kerry’s wife.
Gore said his work with Teresa Heinz Kerry was a signal to the Trump administration that cities across the country are willing to push back against the president’s climate agenda.
“I am thrilled to join the people of this great city to continue the momentum of climate action in the United States and extend my sincere thanks to the Heinz Endowments for their generous support of this Climate Reality Leadership Corps training,” Gore said.
Pittsburgh has become a “symbol of local leadership” on fighting global warming after President Donald Trump’s decision to bail from the Paris accord, he added. Trump told reporters in June that he was separating from the nonbinding climate deal because he was elected to “serve Pittsburgh, not Paris,” a veiled reference to the president’s “America First” campaign message.
Theresa Heinz Kerry’s Heinz Endowments sponsors and partner in hosting the special climate change session in Pittsburgh with Gore’s Climate Reality Project. She manages the philanthropic side of the Heinz family business – John Kerry, meanwhile, was one of the chief negotiators who helped hammer out the Paris deal during former President Barack Obama’s second term.
Obama’s target of 26 to 28 percent greenhouse gas level reductions by 2025 based on 2005 emissions levels mostly missed the mark, according to an analysis in January by the Rhodium Group. The group found the U.S. would not be able to hit the mark under Obama’s climate regulations, which were substantial at the time of the Rhodium’s report.
