The Department of Finance is set to oppose a plan to refund carbon tax in direct payments to Irish households despite fears of public resistance to the new charge.
Senior Merrion Street officials are concerned at the lack of funding for the climate action plan launched in June and the complexity of refunding the tax in an even-handed way, government sources said.
A consultation process run by the Department of Finance this summer has come down strongly in favor of channeling the tax towards building a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and retrofitting homes with “high-spec” insulation.
A majority of the 66 submissions from industry, academia, state agencies and the community and voluntary sector were opposed to the “cheque-in-the-post” or dividend system to offset the impact of carbon tax increases.
The Green Party has estimated the rebate could be worth €85 per citizen next year if the carbon tax was doubled from €20 to €40 per ton in next month’s budget. …snip…
The Taoiseach appeared to favor the dividend system last year following violent yellow vest protests in France against higher fuel costs driven by a carbon charge.
In November, he told the Dail: “The model I personally favor is that which Prime Minister [Justin] Trudeau is pursuing in Canada. I had a chance to speak to him about it around two weeks ago . . . where the money is given back to people in the form of tax credits and welfare.”

The article fails to mention several Provinces openly oppose the fantasy carbon tax and if the Conservative government gets in this fall the federal carbon tax scheme is toast .
Wrong. No cheque, but what I suspect might be some sort of a “rebate” shows up in my bank account occasionally. It is so small I completely missed it for a few years. We currently get screwed for $45 / ton and the pollution is increasing every year. Trudeau rips Canadians off at the $20 number with a theoretical $600 “rebate”. That means BC people should be getting 2 1/4 times as much “rebate” and we don’t. NDP ripoff. Instead, Horgan gives huge subsidies (welfare cheques) to individuals to pay for their electric cars, pretending he is helping everyone. The greatest majority of BC people can’t afford or don’t need a nice new overpriced electric car, but we are forced to pay for them. Trudeau does the same crap.
Income taxes were initiated to fund the Great War. They’re still with us a hundred years later.
Gasoline taxes were initiated to fund roads. Now they’re general revenue. Carbon taxes supposedly will save the planet. That’s just the foot in the door to fund Big Bureaucracies and buy votes for the perpetrators.
Luggage fees at airlines were implemented to offset jet fuel costs. Think that they will just cancel them now that jet fuel is at historic lows?
