Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who wants to eliminate fossil fuels, may visit Kentucky after Republican Rep. Andy Barr invited the firebrand freshman to talk to coal miners about her renewable energy agenda.
“We are taking a peek at when we could possibly go,” Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said Thursday as she left the Capitol.
Barr, who represents central Kentucky, extended the invitation to Ocasio-Cortez during a House Financial Services hearing this week and told her she should get a closer look at struggling coal miners who have played a significant role in powering America. She accepted.
Barr sent a formal invitation later, the Courier-Journal first reported.
Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday in a hallway interview that she has visited Kentucky in the past, and that her next visit would be similar to trips she has made to other communities outside of her Queens and Bronx-based district.
“Just doing the things we do all the time, which is just centering community conversations and really talking to as many diverse communities as possible,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
In February, Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Green New Deal, a resolution that calls for ending fossil fuel use in America and transitioning to wind and solar energy.
Ocasio-Cortez said the Green New Deal calls for funding the pension of coal miners as part of the transition to other forms of energy production.
When asked if her visit to Kentucky would center on economic or environmental issues, Ocasio-Cortez said, “They are the same thing to me.”

Id love to see her visit real mining communities in Eastern Kentucky, like Martin County where the Democrats kicked off their failed war on poverty give decades ago. Maybe she wouldn’t be so quick to ship about white privilege in the 98% white community that’s the 20th poorest in the nation.
Rural Eastern Ky rivals the worst Indian reservations for poverty, despair and dirty, unthinkable water.
