U.N. climate negotiators confirmed Monday they are pushing for a deal at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai that will be the beginning of the end for fossil fuels.
Flying back to Dubai to add his voice to the negotiations, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for “maximum ambition and maximum flexibility” to reach an agreement that can find consensus among the nearly 200 countries.
“We are in a race against time,” Guterres told reporters, AFP reports.
“It’s time to go into overdrive to negotiate in good faith,” he continued after alighting from his jet before going on to join some 80,000 other attendees who have flown in from all around the world for COP28.
The conference of the elites in the lavish Dubai metropolis built by oil money is considered the first-ever call to exit oil, gas, and coal, considered by some as the main culprits in the planet’s “climate crisis.”
Neighboring Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, has led opposition, with the OPEC cartel urging its members to vote against a phase-out of fossil fuels.
Without naming countries, Simon Stiell, the head of the U.N. climate body, called on all sides to remove “unnecessary tactical blockades” holding up a deal.
Guterres called on negotiators to have a “single-minded focus on tackling the root cause of the climate crisis — fossil fuel production and consumption.”
He called on the summit to recognize “the need to phase out all fossil fuels” – a stance opposed by oil producers led by Saudi Arabia.

The “Race against time” here is his realizing that they must do everything they can to create the one-world government of their dreams before we peasants rise up against our governments to stop the destruction of our economies and lives.
But isn’t it funny how the man who says we must give up fossil fuels used fossil fuel-powered jet (undoubtedly not commercial) to tell the COPs to stop using fossil fuels? Couldn’t he have done a Zoom call or something?

I keep hoping for a collapse of the COP meetings. This might happen in COP 28. The initial draft does not call for phasing out fossil fuels and only has weak language on reducing their use. The activist organizations and many nations are extremely upset. Many considered phasing out fossil fuels to be an essential out come. We might be at the point of irresistible force meeting the unmovable object. All countries must agree on the final draft or COP 28 will be officially a failure. (In reality, all COP meetings are failures because they start with the assumption that there is a climate crisis.)

Many nations and extremist groups have decided that fossil fuel use must come to an end and COP 28 was when that objective would be declared. Never mind that this isn’t possible. The people who attend these meetings have no clue about reality. The text to summarize the agreements of the meeting was first release on Monday. Because it didn’t mention phasing out of fossil fuels there was a major rebellion. The US, UK, Germany, Australia, France, and over 100 small nations are insisting on an agreement that fossil fuels be phased out. OPEC and OPEC plus won’t agree to the goal of phasing them out. Abu Dhabi of the oil rich United Arab Emirates is the host for COP 28.
The new text says that nations are expected to transition their energy sector away from fossil fuels. The expected dead line is 2050. Some nations find this language too week. German says it won’t support it and the main negotiator for the UK has returned to London which has been sharply criticized. I haven’t found any feed back from OPEC and similar nations who still might reject it.
The reality no matter what the result of the COP meetings, nations will do what is necessary to keep the lights on. When solar and wind energy couldn’t fill the gap left by the shut down of Germany’s nuclear power, they fired up coal plants that had been closed.
