Barack Obama mixed up Scotland and Ireland in his COP26 speech yesterday — welcoming his baffled Glasgow audience to “the Emerald Isles”.
The ex-US President also horrified locals when he mispronounced the host city.
Mr. Obama even raised eyebrows by referring to “weak coffee and bad food” at the summit venue.
But his arrival electrified the climate bash and sparked a scramble for tickets to his talk.
He told delegates: “Even though I’m not required to attend summits like this anymore, old habits die hard.
“And when the issue at hand is the health of our planet, and the world our children and our grandchildren will inherit, then you will have a hard time keeping me away. That’s why I’m here today.”
Mr. Obama jetted into the city late on Sunday night for his event at the Scottish Event Campus.
He stunned his audience by saying: “We’re in the Emerald Isles”.
And in another gaffe, he became the latest world figure at the summit to call Glasgow “Glass-cow”.
Arriving on the stage to a standing ovation, Mr. Obama said: “Thanks so much, thank you. Hello Glasgow.”
However, residents weren’t impressed with his pronunciation of their home city, with some saying it sounded like “Glass cow”.
On Twitter, one person posted a picture of a glass cow and wrote: “Obama .. this is a glass cow. You are in Glasgow.”
Another said: “Good heavens. Obama keeps saying Glasgow as if the GOW part rhymes with COW.
“Last week Biden was actually saying Glas-COW. Gah.”
A third wrote: “Good job Obama’s no longer in office as making “Glasgow” rhyme with “Cow” is surely an impeachable offense.”
Mr. Obama met delegates at the SEC today for the ninth day of the landmark summit.
The Democrat told how since the Paris Agreement in 2015, most countries have failed to meet their agreed emissions targets.
He said: “We are nowhere near where we need to be yet. For starters, despite the progress that Paris represented, most countries have failed to meet the action plans that they set six years ago.
“And the consequences of not moving fast enough are becoming more apparent all the time.
“Last month a study found that 85 percent of the global population weather events that were more severe because of climate change – stronger storms, longer heatwaves, more intense flooding, crippling droughts.
“Parts of the world are becoming more dangerous to live in, triggering new migration patterns and worsening conflict around the globe.”
