More than half of British people are unwilling to pay more for their energy bills in order to meet the UK’s climate goals, new polling shows.
Polling from think tank Bright Blue showed 52 percent of people are unwilling to pay more for household electricity and 51 percent for home heating.
The figures reveal the uphill struggle the Government may face when it comes to decarbonizing some of the trickiest sectors as it strives to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Home heating accounts for around 20 percent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and is considered one of the more difficult areas of decarbonization compared to transport or electricity, because of the costs and hassle of changing systems.
The survey also revealed that nearly 60 percent of people are skeptical the UK will reach its target to be carbon neutral – emitting only as much as is sucked up – in the next 30 years.
Ofgem has accepted that transitioning to net zero will mean additional costs but has said it is committed to keeping these as low as possible.
Electricity bills are likely to be less impacted than home heating as the costs of wind and solar power drop, and in the long-term energy efficiency may keep all costs down.
“The public recognizes that significant changes are needed to the way they heat their homes to reduce their carbon footprint, but most are unwilling to pay more to do so.
“Government and businesses need to do more to help and incentivize householders to retrofit their homes,” said Anvar Sarygulov, Senior Researcher at Bright Blue.
The Government this week rolled out its £2bn Green Homes Grant scheme, which allows homeowners to apply for up to £10,000 for energy efficiency measures such as insulation or double glazing.
But it has faced calls to expand the scheme after suggestions demand may outstrip supply by 10 times.
An energy white paper that would outline how the country is supposed to decarbonize was expected last summer but has been promised by the end of the year.
