Germany will work with the Dutch exploration and production company ONE-Dyas to operate a gas field in the North Sea above Schiermonnikoog and the German Wadden island of Borkum, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported on Wednesday.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Bernd Althusmann, economy minister of the state of Lower Saxony, NOS reported. [bold, links added]
“We cannot afford to ask the Netherlands for more gas and continue to refuse to extract our own gas,” Althusmann said.
According to DutchNews, the gas field will be located around 20 kilometers north of the islands.
The area contains low-calorie gas, compatible with domestic use, and could be used in German and Dutch households.
As the gas field is located both under the Dutch and German seabed, the agreement of both countries is needed before the gas can be extracted.
While the Netherlands had previously approved of the plan, Germany used to be opposed to the idea, NOS reported on Wednesday (20 April).
However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to impending gas shortages that could not be ignored.

Great foresight on the part of governments once again. In 2-3 years the gas will be flowing, and the Ukraine invasion will be a distant memory.
One small step…
Will those troublemakers from Greenpeace be going other there to block the area with their Fossil Fuels Ships
