Although the Biden administration is using tax credits and emissions regulations to try to compel more Americans to buy electric cars, a new poll shows that only 4% of Americans own an electric vehicle (EV) and only 12% are “seriously considering” buying one.
On the other hand, 43% said they might consider buying an EV sometime in the future and 41% unequivocally said they would not buy one. [emphasis, links added]
“Americans’ adoption of electric vehicles is proving to be slow,” said Gallup in reference to its March 1-23 poll.
In addition, the survey found that “While about four in 10 U.S. adults think using EVs helps address climate change a ‘great deal’ (12%) or a ‘fair amount’ (27%), roughly six in 10 believe it helps ‘only a little’ (35%) or ‘not at all’ (26%). [Total: 61%]”
On the political scale, Democrats are more likely to be EV-friendly but Republicans are not keen on the product.
For instance, Gallup asked, “Thinking now about electric vehicles, which of the following applies to you — you currently own an electric vehicle, you are seriously considering buying an electric vehicle, you might consider buying an electric vehicle in the future, or you would not buy an electric vehicle?”
In response, 6% of Democrats said they own an EC and 22% are “seriously considering” buying one. 54% said they might consider it in the future and 17% said flat-out no.
For Republicans, about 1% said they currently own an EV or were seriously considering purchasing one. However, 26% said they might consider buying one in the future while 71% said flat-out no.
For Independents, the respective percentages were 4%, 11%, 47%, and 38% (see chart).
When it comes to EVs and their effect on climate change, 55% of Republicans said no effect, and 32% said “only a little.”
For Democrats, however, 22% said the effect was “a great deal” and 46% said “a fair amount.” (See chart.)
“While ownership of electric vehicles is on the rise in the U.S., the percentage of Americans who say they own one remains limited at 4%,” reported Gallup.
“Though they are often promoted as a key way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and address the effects of climate change, the public remains largely unconvinced that the use of EVs accomplishes this aim.”
The survey team noted that the Biden administration has “set a goal that half of all new vehicle sales be electric by 2030” and “the state of California has mandated that all new vehicle sales in the state by the year 2035 must be zero-emission vehicles….”
The Biden administration also announced on April 12 that it wants to impose tougher emissions rules to compel carmakers to build more EVs by 2032.
“Depending on how automakers comply, the EPA projects that at least 60% of new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. would be electric by 2030 and up to 67% by 2032,” reported the Associated Press.
According to Cox Automotive, the parent of Kelley Blue Book, “the average transaction price for electric cars was $65,291 in September 2022.
By comparison, gas-powered vehicles cost less, with an average transaction price of about $48,100 in the same timeframe.”

“We are supporting our industries that have been around for 100 years supporting us and we want to support them now,” Anderson added in the “Fox & Friends First” interview. “We think there’s 12 years left and some of those states [banning the sale of gas-powered vehicles] might change their mind by that time and see the petroleum-product vehicles are not so bad.” States planning to ban gas-powered vehicles include California, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington.

Fortuately the US is not the only country that is adopting electric vehicles. As ECV emissions ranks only 2nd to power generation in CO2 emissions, switching over to electric vehicles, marks a significant development for reducing greenhouse gasses
Some of your worst comments ever, Drewski. An EV vs a conventional car is like the difference between fibre optic and dial up??? Waiting for your EV to charge along the Interstate IS dial – up. Good time to do the NY Times crossword puzzle. “HUNDREDS of new vehicle makers?”
Two hundred? Three hundred? How many survive? Don’t post your comments under the influence.
I remember a time when 2 out of 3 Americans said that wouldn’t get a smart phone either. What happened?
Driving an electric vehicle is like going from dial up internet to fibre optic internet. The invotion coming out of the HUNDREDS of new automakers is quite astounding ESPECIALLY in battery development.
Drewski, let’s clarify one thing. Your smart phone is powered by a battery making it a “battery” phone. EV’s are not electric, they are powered by a (very large) battery meaning they are battery cars. some call them battery electric cars – BEV’s.
With regards to BEV’s, it would help you to better understand the fullness of the subject by reading the attached. There is no logical connection between a BEV and smart phone because the SP technolgy that brings real tangible benefits to all. Regarding the BEV, there are many options for people, like avoiding an expensive BEV with questionable resale value after it’s travelled some distance and certainly no tangible benefits when compared to an ICEV.
The one issuse alone that really bothers me most is the children in the Congo working in a Chinese owned cobolt mine. Have you seen some of the disgusting vision in TV showing what those kids are doing for a few cents per day?

So EVs (electric vehicles) are not electric. Got it.
Colin, let ME clarify one thing – I did NOT compare batteries in phones to batteries in cars! I was comparing a survey of people who said 17 years ago that they would not use a product (smart phone) and, of course, that turned out to be complete horse pucky.
Just like the present day survey on electric vehicles quoted in the article above.
There is a big difference between smart phones and electric vehicles. Most can afford a smart phone. The average family in the US can not afford a brand new internal combustion vehicle let a lone a more expensive electric one. With inflation driven by government spending, energy costs, and other factors I’m sure that the ability to afford an EV is declining. People won’t being buying what they can’t afford.
Anyone who thinks EVs benefit the environment have no concept of total lifecycle cost.
On a perfect day, adopting EVs will not make one iota of difference to lowering greenhouse gases, per their own data!:
Total USA EV Adoption Will Only Reduce Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2.5 %
Base data presented by the US EPA and others is self contradictory in their promotion of EVs as a solution to global warming

Taking account of all the Green features any product, installation, purporting to be a substitute for any established present products-EVs,windmills, house heaters, etc. must be assessed for the many costs of its manufacturing, immediate drawbacks and long term non-Greenp problems.
Consideration of these matters makes EVs a very definite No, No!
They are complete disaster, except for their good accelerating and quiet engines.
Even the hazards pedestrians.
Does Mr Biden know or care
Yes, an accurate cost benefits analysis for the Green energy transition would be welcome. There’s a short cut. Intuition. A hunch. If it looks like junk, you don’t have to buy it to find out.
This wont stop Biden and his EPA from forcing EV’s upon us Biden a is a Globalists and scum sucker
