Lori Rodriguez, a 27-year-old communications professional in New York City, is not saving for retirement, and it isn’t necessarily because she can’t afford to — it’s because she doesn’t expect it to matter.
Like many people her age, Rodriguez believes climate change will have catastrophic effects on our planet.
Some 88% of millennials — a higher percentage than any other age group — accept that climate change is happening, and 69% say it will impact them in their lifetimes.
Engulfed in a constant barrage of depressing news stories, many young people are skeptical about saving for an uncertain future.
“I want to hope for the best and plan for a future that is stable and secure, but, when I look at current events and at the world we are predicting, I do not see how things could not be chaotic in 50 years,” Rodriguez says. “The weather systems are already off, and I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to be a little apocalyptic.”
Mental-health issues affecting young adults and adolescents in the U.S. have increased significantly in the past decade, a study published in March in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found.
The number of individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 reporting symptoms of major depression increased 52% from 2005 to 2017, while older adults did not experience any increase in psychological stress at this time, and some age groups even saw decreases.
Study author Jean Twenge says this may be attributed to the increased use of digital media, which has changed modes of interaction enough to impact social lives and communication.
Millennials are also said to suffer from “eco-anxiety,” according to a 2018 report from the American Psychological Association, with 72% saying their emotional well-being is affected by the inevitability of climate change, compared with just 57% of people over the age of 45.

The above comments are correct that a big part of this is the indoctrination the kids receive in schools. However, this article uses the usual media tricks to exaggerate claims. Having 69% of young people believing that climate change will impact their lives does NOT mean that this percentage believes in an apoplectic impact as the article implies. It certain that the percentage that believe in that is much lower.
There are other issues impacting saving for retirement but of course climate change is always the scapegoat for everything. I remember that age very well and it seemed as if retirement age would never arrive. Yes, I intellectually knew it, but is different from really believing. This decreases the motivation for retirement savings. A big factor today is the crippling debt most young people must generate to attend college. When my kids were in school not long ago tuition costs were around $1000 per credit. I finished my engineering degree at the most expensive public college in the state of Oregon and my last quarter cost $450 for a full load. The text book companies are almost criminal in the way they have jacked up the prices. When I was in school an upper division engineering text book would run $30 or my $40. Today they are over $200. In addition the text book companies come out with new editions very often in order to limit the students’ ability to buy used textbooks. Some school force the purchase of new books by bundling material produced by the school needed for a class with the new text book so the students must buy it. Perhaps if the climate change fraud wasn’t consuming so much political effort some time could be spent correcting these issues.
Well they are certainly going to starve when they get to old age and have live on welfare,

Canada’s Prime Minister Dress Up solved the anxiety issue, he legalized the don’t give a shit drug… dope . Between electronics and the bombardment from virtue signalers it’s no wonder people look to escape reality .
Legalizing dope in Canada was a timed strategy to mentally soften up the millennial’s who are going to get shafted by the carbon tax .
Of course there is an election in November so perhaps another Australia election result is going to occur .. One can hope .

The Back to Nature freaks and deep ecologists telling the kids their parents are conributing to Global Warming/Climate Change because their not riding a bicycle to word or not installing Solar Panels and not going Vegan over this Global Warming/Climate Change hoax Anyone for Home Schooling and getting them out of these Indoctrination centers
In the first 1/2 of the 1970’s, when I was a teenager, the same thinking existed, although the specific reasons were entirely different. (Nuclear war, rapture and Jesus’ second coming, oncoming Ice Age, unlivable earth killed by pollution, etc) There were people who wouldn’t bother planting a tree for example, because what’s the point? Either by one way or another, we’ll all be gone long before there is a nice mature tree.
My advice to youngsters : think for yourselves. When the predators figure out you’re lost, you’re vulnerable.
Relax guys AOC said she was joking . She does that a lot .
I feel empathy for millennial’s who have been been bombarded most of their lives with not just false scary climate propaganda but a very negative “news”cycle
Schools and universities have been infiltrated with activists .
Once in a while shut the electronics off for and go for long walks .
The earth doesn’t have a fever and the con-men pushing such utter rubbish
have two main objectives ….your money and their power .
Who can be surprised at this given the indoctrination they have been getting from schools and the constant drumbeat in the MSM. Wonder what they ate going to do when they are in their 60s and still waiting for the climate disaster that isn’t coming.
