One in seven Americans thinks global warming is a sign of the apocalypse, according to a new Yale University poll.
Yale pollsters asked more than 1,200 adults their religious views regarding the apocalypse and found 4 percent of Americans believe global warming is “definitely” a sign, while another 10 percent believe it’s “probably” a sign of the end of days. Eighteen percent said they were “not sure” if global warming meant the apocalypse was near.
The Yale poll found about 9 percent of Americans believe the apocalypse will happen during their lifetime.
“For a significant number of Americans, the reality, causes and meaning of global warming are seen through the lens of their religious beliefs,” reads the Yale’s Program On Climate Change Communication’s Tuesday press release on the poll. “Some reject the evidence that humans are causing global warming because they believe God controls the climate. Others believe that global warming is evidence that the world will be ending soon.”
The group most likely to hold the belief were Evangelical Christians, but about 4 percent of atheists and 9 percent of people who don’t believe in creationism said global warming is a sign of the end of the world after being asked a number of questions about their views on the apocalypse.
