Liz Truss [pictured] is set to give the green light to fracking as part of her landmark energy package today.
Insiders expect her to rip up the moratorium in England which has banned it since 2019, to help boost our own supplies.
A landmark report is expected to say that it can be done safely under certain conditions. [bold, links added]
But it will only be allowed to take place when local communities agree to it.
Locals will be wooed into backing new projects with the promise of hugely discounted energy bills.
Charles McAllister of UK Onshore Oil and Gas said last night: “In return for absolute policy support, the UK shale gas industry will deliver community benefits to ease bills for local residents, as well as energy security, jobs, tax, and a lower carbon gas supply.
“The potential benefits of fracking to the UK are too obvious to be ignored any longer.” But yesterday Ms. Truss was warned the move would not solve the energy crisis alone.
National Infrastructure Commission Chairman, Sir John Armitt, and Committee on Climate Change Chair Lord Deben said in a letter to the new PM: “Our gas reserves – offshore or from shale – are too small to impact meaningfully the prices faced by UK consumers.”

this is sure to get those idiots from Greenpeace all stirred up their going to sail one of their Fossil Fueled Ships over the Atlantic to try and block the Construction maybe have some in Plastic Kayaks row their way out there to hold up construction
Charles is not respected and will keep his mouth shut about matters he has no control over, if he is wise.
With a new Prime Minister who might have an idea or two about what’s happening, and a new King, Charles III, who is ‘Green’ through and through – things just might get to “May you live in interesting times”. (Old Chinese saying.)
My company (remain unnamed) tried to do exploration activities to introduce fracking style gas production of tight shale plays in Poland, which should be able to produce a whole lot more gas than they do, but were lambasted by Euro-greens and had to close up shop. There could be more production in Europe but by choice they do not even allow exploration activities. The archaic land-ownership rules and mineral-rights rules are so difficult to navigate, even if the greens had not shouted them down, production would have been a nightmare. There are so many layers of complexity that I cannot do justice to them. And so they are reliant on Russia and will go cold this winter.
The last paragraph is troubling…..
Our gas reserves are too small to impact meaningfully prices paid by consumers…. I have to ask, how much has the environment benefited from the trillions spent on renewables? Infinitesimal, can’t be measured . It is easy for measure the footprint, gathering low density energy with ever larger wind turbines. No one can say that the Earth is healthier with them, that Mother Earth’s fever is cooling with every new installation.
I don’t know how long Truss will last, but there is no better time than now to revive the UK’s oil and gas fortunes. The North Sea made Aberdeen a boomtown and the UK financially stable. It can happen again, ignore the detractors.
Sadly there was one thing missing from the announcement, and that is a cap on the price that fracked gas can be sold at. Several companies were prepared to start fracking years ago when wholesale gas prices were 20% of what they currently are, so even if they expected some increase in prices it shows that they thought they could make a profit at fairly low prices. Therefore if part of any licence to start fracking included a clause that the gas could be sold at no more than, say, 50% of current prices they would still make a decent profit and customers would benefit from lower bills.
Good policy choice! Maybe her decision will “draw off” some of the international environmental NGO’s so we can start getting our house in order (here).
