Thousands took part in Friday’s UK Youth Strike 4 Climate, and there are concerns that these protests have been hijacked by hard-line climate groups and professional activists – do scroll down here to the Socialist Worker banners held aloft by these malleable teens.
There are calls for action against those children taking part – not least in Australia – but there is a better way.
They should be asked if they want to do something to ‘save the planet’ other than just walk out of school. Will they pledge the following?
Give up their iPads, computers, mobiles, and TVs and walk or use public transport, not have their parents drive them everywhere?
They would, of course, have to stop wearing clothes and shoes made from man-made fibers or purchase plastic goods. They should avoid gas for cooking or heating. The final pledge would be that when older they would not buy a car or travel in one.
They must also boycott all goods from China (£45billion-worth a year from a country which creates 30 percent of the world’s emissions).
That, of course, means their Nokia, HTC, Blackberry, Samsung or Apple iPhones; their laptop computers and video games contain numerous parts made in China, while the clothes they wear and the ‘designer’ handbag might be from a sweatshop.
There are numerous toys produced in China, from teddy bears to bicycles, so the demonstrators must check for the ‘Made in China’ label and refuse it.
Only then will these children realize that talk is cheap but action comes at a personal cost.

It is difficult to change a system based on the decisions of previous generations, only the products of those decisions are available today and not the ones resulting from change, to suggest one wait and only use future products is ludicrous.
