President Trump announced the United States will join a 1 trillion trees initiative launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The initiative encourages countries to collectively plant one trillion trees to absorb carbon dioxide in order to combat climate change.
Trump, a skeptic of climate change, did not mention it in his remarks at the Davos summit Tuesday, instead speaking generally about the importance of better managing trees and forests.
“We’re committed to conserving the majesty of God’s creation and the natural beauty of our world,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. “will continue to show strong leadership in restoring, growing, and better managing our trees and our forests.”
The trillion trees initiative spawned from remarks by an ecologist last year at a meeting held by the American Association for the Advancement of Science who said that planting 1.2 trillion trees could “cancel out” the last decade of the world’s carbon emissions.
Trump’s focus on trees is consistent with the priorities of Republicans in Congress, who are soon planning to present a conference-wide plan to address climate change.
As part of that plan, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Arkansas, will introduce legislation focused on planting trees to absorb carbon.

Plant lots and lots of trees. They are a net positive for your local climate. Shade, windbreaks and a place for birds to nest.
If you don’t like ‘invasive species’, transplant local trees.
Meanwhile Drax power station in the UK is burning trees as biomass all in the name of carbon reduction! It would be helpful if President Trump stopped the export of wood chip from the US to Drax, apparently the current activity amounts to over 300 square miles of forest destroyed annually.
But that is logical and makes sense. Greens are incapable of that mind thought.
It is very disturbing that President Trump and other Republicans are buying into the concept that something has to be done about climate change. The climate model that most closely matches real world data, INMCM5, predicts warming of 1.4 degrees by 2100. We do not have to do anything to meet the arbitrary goal of the Paris Treaty of 1.5 degrees. The current climate hysteria is based on model RCP8.5, which makes unrealistic assumptions such as a ten fold increase in coal use, and uses the incorrect assumption that carbon dioxide is a major controlling factor of our climate.
Planting trees is good but there are issues that may not be considered. People who implement the plan might select only the trees that are best at adsorbing carbon dioxide. This would negatively impact the biodiversity of not only the trees of the resulting forest but other plants and animals. Other valuable habitants, such as prairies, could be sacrificed to plant trees. The resulting forests would have to be better managed than we do today otherwise some of the adsorbed carbon dioxide will end up being released again in forests fires.
My family is very friendly to trees. Where as some of our neighbors have removed most of their trees for pastures or huge lawns, we have retained ours and live in the middle of a forest. I am letting some of the farm land I own in Oregon be reclaimed by the surrounding forest. So the above caution is from someone who likes trees.
Trump and the Republicans did not buy the climate lies. They threw them a bone.
Plant a tree and convert CO2. More CO2 means the trees will prosper and grow faster. Burn all the carbon you want. It helps the plants grow.
Hey Greens now’s your chance to real’y show how dedcated you are go out and plant some trees espcialy you Hollywood wanks or will digging in the ground soil your Lilywhite hands
