The Atlantic article above cited five glacial accidents since 1987 – which is a huge improvement over 100 years ago when tourists were having glacial accidents every day and climate change was causing a plague of vipers.

The rapid melting of the glaciers has softened the snow bridges of the crevasses, while miniature avalanches are very frequent.
There have been many accidents and several deaths in the mountains in the past week. Hardly a day has passed without tourists being extricated from crevasses.
Another result of the heat has been a plague of vipers in the lower Alps.
