A study has found electric vehicles manufactured by Tesla are no better for the environment than diesel or petrol-fueled cars.
Despite being recognized as among the most environmentally friendly on the market, Tesla vehicles harm the planet just about as much as their diesel and petrol equivalents, according to a recent analysis by Engaged Tracking, a London-based research firm.
Engaged Tracking determined that the production of Tesla vehicles — and generating the electricity to keep them running — contributes to greenhouse gas emissions just as much as traditional vehicles in the United Kingdom.
This is because more CO2 is emitted during the manufacturing of electric vehicles, and the electricity Tesla vehicles in the U.K. require are generated mostly by coal and gas.
“Teslas are not cleaner to run than the average car in the U.K. The annual emissions of a U.K. car is 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide, based on an average of 7,800 miles a year,” Engaged Tracking’s chief analyst Jonathan Harris said to the Sunday Times. “Both the Tesla Model S vehicles we analyzed have the same emissions as an ordinary petrol car of 1.5 tons of CO2 per year.”
However, Tesla quickly pushed back on the group’s findings, claiming the comparison of a Model S — a larger model — to an average vehicle is not fair.
“It makes no sense to compare Model S to the average annual emissions figure for cars in the U.K. because that average includes a lot of smaller models that are dissimilar to Model S,” said a Tesla spokesman. “Any fair analysis shows that electric vehicles like Model S and Model 3 generate far less CO2 per mile than any comparable gas-powered car.”
This isn’t the first time a study has determined electric vehicles to have no substantial benefit for the environment.
The Manhattan Institute published a report in May that analyzed the cost of electric automobiles and their effectiveness to clean the environment.
The Institute’s findings were quite notable: electric cars actually increase the amount of pollution into the atmosphere compared to new internal combustion vehicles.

I can still remember them saying FIGHT POLLUTION GET A HORSE well those fools who came out with this tend to forget Horse Manure and it the so called Good Old Days there was tons of it plus dead horses as well having to pull heavy loads the animals died. How astounding that it all turns out to be a lie !
How incredibly astounding !
Even though the conclusive proof of this lie was there
for more than forty years.
The fact that comparing a larger electric car to a smaller gasoline car shows no savings in emissions says a lot. A lot of emissions are still there. Now think about California and other governments that have mandated all new cars must be electric after a certain date. They won’t be making the difference they are hoping for. Yet, for the little difference they will achieve, a lot of economic hardships will be created since even with subsidies the electric cars are a lot more expensive.
Two perfect cars for Al Bore and his Go Green wackos the Flintstone car and the Gilligan’s Island car both are foot operated
Even in sunny CA, the amount of renewable electricity is misleading since much of the renewable solar and wind energy are pushed to neighboring states because coastal peak demand hours are later than peak generation hours. So all those Tesla/EVs are sucking down power at times when the backup generation is burning dread fossil fuel.
Off-topic: seems every other time I’m driving from LA to LV I notice the Ivanpah station is offline in the middle of an afternoon.
Rhee, give them an F for effort.
Ride a Hog, they’re cleaner than a Tesla.
This is before you start to factor in the rare earth minerals that are required in the batteries, and the child-labor used to extract those minerals in Africa.
BOO-HOO-HOO Elon. ‘I isn’t fair!!!’ I assume all of your production facilites have SAFE SPACES. The only way an electric vehicle will be totally CO2 emission negative is via solar or wind. But, if one depends on the use of an automobile 24/7/365 you’re going to be BANKRUPT. The global temp pause continues.
In theory running electric cars could be emission free. That would require the use of nuclear power. This will never happen because nuclear plants are shutting down.
