East Antarctica, which covers two-thirds of the South Pole, has cooled a whopping 2.8°C over the past four decades; West Antarctica has approximately 1.6″C. … only the tiny Antarctic Peninsula saw statistically insignificant warming.
German climate website Die kalte Sonne posted its 64th climate video here and examined a new paper on Antarctica by Zhu et al (2021): “An Assessment of ERA5 Reanalysis for Antarctic Near-Surface Air Temperature”.
The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) released its latest ERA5 reanalysis dataset in 2017 and Zhu and his researchers compared the near-surface temperature data from ERA5 and ERA-Interim with the measured data from 41 weather stations.
They found that the temperature trend from ERA5 is consistent with that from observations. The result: a cooling trend dominates East Antarctica and West Antarctica while a warming trend exists in the Antarctic Peninsula.
Note that the regions of East and West Antarctica combined are vastly larger than the tiny Antarctic Peninsula.
Substantial cooling
The results are summarized as follows (cropped from Die kalte Sonne):
The table above shows East Antarctica, which covers two-thirds of the continent, saw a cooling of 0.70°C per decade over the past 40 years. In total that particular region has cooled about 2.8°C since 1980.
West Antarctica has cooled at a rate of 0.42°C per decade over the past 40 years.
Die kalte Sonne finds the results “surprising” and “statistically significant”. And though the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed moderately, Die kalte Sonne sees nothing significant happening over this comparatively small region.
This of course should be seen as good news for the global warming alarmists who fear the South Pole might melt.

Of course, this is all ENTIRELY in line with the predictions of climate alarmists, and so will be ignored.
What does the cooling in Antarctica tell us about Global warming?
https://wp.me/pTN8Y-8×5
Those Global Warming/Climate Change advocates at a loss for words when it snows and they have been telling us there would be no more snow the same away Gore the Bore was predicting a Ice Free Arctic and people still listen to the Con-Man and recite his stupid poem
Yeah, I can almost hear the climate zealots wanting to exclaim that conditions in the Antarctic are too old to permit volcanic activity. It would be great comedy to hear a high-level comment of that sort.
The alarmists are doing their best to ignore volcanic activity and its impact on the climate. West Antarctica has 500 volcanoes all of which are active and or semi activity. Their activity has been increasing over the past 50 years.
“A warming planet due to human-induced climate change is likely to contribute to an increase in volcanic activity, according to a recent study in the journal Geology.”

Because every good scientist knows that correlation equals causation!
No surprises here, the only portion not cooling so much would be the area influenced by magma warming. The communist left want us to forget volcanic influences down under our southern ice sheet
From the article, “This (the cooling) of course should be seen as good news for the global warming alarmists who fear the South Pole might melt.” It is in fact bad news for the alarmists. It weakens the cause for their primary objective for “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.” The pause in warming earlier this century should also have been good news. Instead they denied it and various alarmists came up with 68 different excuses for the pause.
We do need to remember that one day there could be true bad news from the Antarctic. There is enough ice in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to significantly raise the sea level. I believe the estimate is 15 feet. Volcanic under the ice may some day send this ice sheet into the ocean.
This you wont be seeing on CNN or reading in the front pages of the NYT’s or in Time Magazine
