Hollywood icon Robert Redford says the coronavirus pandemic has produced a number of “pleasant surprises” for environmentalists who are faced with the “daunting” task of saving the planet from climate change.
The long-time activist penned an NBC op-ed with his son James on the green lessons Americans can learn from the deadly contagion.
“What has the scourge of COVID-19 revealed to us?” he asked Thursday. “Will any of these hard-won lessons help us as we turn to face the potential calamity of climate change that looms on the horizon?”
The actor pointed to President Trump as an example of “failed leadership” before pivoting to a global economic shutdown’s effect on the environment.
“There have also been some pleasant surprises,” the pair continued. “As many of the world’s transportation and industrial sectors have reduced operations, there has been a remarkable decline in global levels of carbon dioxide emissions. Of course, the cost in life and livelihood negates any celebration. Nonetheless, there is no denying that we have gotten a very real glimpse of the potential for global environmental repair. … Clearly, inertia [on green activism] is unacceptable.”
Mr. Redford then said that “the power of collective action” must be applied because “global entities unwilling to adjust their profits for the greater good” are a continued obstacle to environmentalists.
“[We need] to wrest control of environmental policies held hostage by stakeholders desperately clinging to their profits and power,” he said. “If we come together to do what we can, we can and will blunt the curve of climate change and create a better world for the many generations to come.”

I remember when Cheech Marin nailed Redford perfectly with the sarcastic ‘Ordinary Bob’ tag (after his movie Ordinary People). I wish that artists would realize that their lofty status in society is really a luxury. Stop lecturing.

These people are besides themselves and tripping over each other to relate Covid-19 to climate change. Here for example, is the top climate guy himself, the man in charge of protecting the planet from fossil fuels.

Since Redford apparently regards CO2 as a terrible scourge and poison, he should get rid of himself, since all life depends on CO2, directly or indirectly, and he himself is largely made up of carbon (and wealth). The linking of the Covid 19 pandemic to “punishment” for our sins is exactly the same mindset of the medieval church. That viruses are also part of nature seems to miss these mentally deprived rich people. Pandemics and epidemics happen, just like diseases, a sad fact of life. Redford and his fellow celebrated actors are where they are and wealth exactly as a result of the world they condemn.
Redford attended the University of Colorado Boulder in Boulder, Colorado for a year and a half, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. While there, he worked at the restaurant/bar The Sink; a painting of his likeness is prominent in the bar’s murals. While at Colorado, Redford began drinking heavily, and as a result lost his half-scholarship and was kicked out of school BUT did receive an honorary degree in 1988.

How about people unwilling to surrender most gains made in modern society so that an imaginary Unicorn can be chased?

And the ordinary citizens that oppose radical environmental policies? Do they just shut up and do as they’re told?
Exactly – the question is, who is “we”? I’m certainly not part of this collectivist “we”. As an aside, the constant insinuation that profits are somehow a bad thing is incredibly annoying. In reality, when companies are profitable, it mainly shows that consumers approve of their conduct and goods & services.
If only we could wrest control of the narrative from celebrity poseurs and their profit-driven enablers, the mass media, and deluded and/or power hungry governments.
Why are Hollywood people in general so insane?
Redford conveniently ignores that this economic down turn is unsustainable and, if continued, could cause untold human suffering the like of which we have never seen. Even out on his ranch, his productivity would quickly crash without regular supplies, machines, parts, and fuel for his operation.
