Prince Charles was last night facing embarrassment after taking a series of private jet flights while lecturing world leaders about climate change.
On a trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, the Prince met activist Greta Thunberg and used an electric Jaguar car to travel to the Swiss resort.
But the MoS can reveal that in the 11 days before his high-profile appearance, Charles took three flights on private jets for official Government business and one on a helicopter.
After his speech last Wednesday, during which he urged world leaders to take ‘bold and imaginative action’ on the environment, he took a fourth jet to Israel for an official trip.
Taking into account an additional five so-called ‘empty-leg’ flights required to collect the Prince, his jet and helicopter travel totaled more than 16,000 miles in less than a fortnight at an estimated cost to the taxpayer of £280,000.
Last night, a Clarence House spokesman said: ‘Global travel is an inescapable part of the Prince’s role as a senior member of the Royal Family representing the UK overseas.
‘When he travels he does so at the request of the British Government. He does not choose the destinations any more than he chooses the means by which the journeys are undertaken.’
According to the Paramount Business Jet calculator, which lets passengers work out their carbon emissions, the air travel will have emitted more than 162 metric tons of carbon – 18 times an average Briton’s annual total.
Muna Suleiman, of Friends Of The Earth, said: ‘Climate targets can’t be met without cutting pollution from aviation emissions, and private jets are a particularly wasteful way to travel.’
But a Royal source said: ‘The Prince has been campaigning against the dangers of global warming for 50 years.
‘As soon as there is a more efficient way of traveling, bearing in mind all the factors involved, he’ll be the first to adopt them.’
The string of flights began on January 11 when a Bombardier Global Express flew 944 miles from Austria to collect the Prince from his Birkhall residence in Scotland.
It flew him to Muscat, where he paid his respects on behalf of the Queen following the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said. Palace aides said the trip was organized at less than 12 hours’ notice.
Last Wednesday, the Prince flew 750 miles by private jet from Scotland to Switzerland for the Davos summit.
Later that day he traveled 1,740 miles to Israel. Officials said a private jet was chosen for security reasons and the Prince only accepted the Davos invitation because it was on the way to Israel.

Charles has proved himself to be both irrational with is support for Islam, the pedophile bishop of sussex and for the climate change scam. He has always been an extremely wealthy hipprocrite with a carbon footprint 1000s times that of the poor who he wants to prevents from access to energy. He must not become KIng.
Prince Charles is part of a larger pattern. Advocates of strong action on climate change who are actors and many American politicians are also using private jets or doing other things to create a very large emission foot prints. The sacrifices for the environment need to be made by the little people.
greetings from New Zealand……Charlie Boy is all ‘gas and gaters, can smell all things ‘carbon’! Greta, has rose tinted glasses, can see all things carbon!! regards, Trevor.
Enlightenment escapes this inbred buffoon. Long live the Queen.
And the Prince was not flapping his arms and did not use a magic flying carpet he burned up countless gallons of jet fuel while flying all over Europe and to the middle east and not peep from Greta and the Eco-Freaks
‘The Prince has been campaigning against the dangers of global warming for 50 years.”
What utter horse-pucky. Fifty years ago would have put the year 1970. And at that time the “climate scientists” of the time were decrying a coming new Ice Age and Paul Ehrlich was saying that withing two decades billions would be dead from starvation.
Just more proof that these people know nothing about which they speak. But we peons must stop our flying for pleasure or business, must stop driving our gasoline-powered vehicles, must stop using natural gas to heat our homes while the elite continue living like they have always done.
A new ice age is overdue, look up the charts on google image with the key words “temperature last 450,000 years”.
Who cares how many miles he flies…….climate change is a myth….having said that, his conduct is nothing short of HYPOCRITICAL. They are all hypocrites. People need to call them out on their double standards and hypocrisy.
Charles should be proud of the many thousand tons of precious, life-giving, beneficial trace gas CO2 he is contributing to the atmosphere. I hope he contributes much more.
