The Portland Public Schools board unanimously approved a resolution this week that bans textbooks and other teaching materials that deny climate change exists or cast doubt on whether humans are to blame.
The resolution, introduced by school board member Mike Rosen, also directs the superintendent and staff to develop a plan for offering “curriculum and educational opportunities that address climate change and climate justice” in all Portland public schools, the Portland Tribune reported.
“It is unacceptable that we have textbooks in our schools that spread doubt about the human causes and urgency of the crisis,” Lincoln High School student Gaby Lemieux said during board testimony Tuesday.
“Climate education is not a niche or a specialization, it is the minimum requirement for my generation to be successful in our changing world.”
Bill Bigelow, the editor of the ReThinking Schools online magazine and co-author of a textbook on environmental education, worked with several environmental groups to present the resolution, the Tribune reported.
“A lot of the text materials are kind of thick with the language of doubt, and obviously the science says otherwise,” Mr. Bigelow said. “We don’t want kids in Portland learning material courtesy of the fossil fuel industry.”
He took particular issue with teaching materials that used iffy language when discussing climate change, like “might,” “may” and “could.”
Asked if the resolution will force the district to buy new textbooks, such as his book, “A People’s Curriculum for the Earth,” Mr. Bigelow said ReThinking Schools is a nonprofit, not a money-maker, the Tribune reported.
“What we’re asking for is not: Buy new stuff,” he said. “What we’re looking for is a whole different model of curriculum development and distribution.”

Lysenkoist brainwashing. Stalin would be proud.
“Free speech, we don’t need no stinking’ free speech,” said by no one with a brain.

If I can find some time later I’ll check the IRS Form 990 filed by his “non-profit” organization. Just take a quick look at the reported stipends for officers and any travel or entertainment expenses. Get a rough idea of just how “non-profit” the outfit really is.
Google “ReThinking Schools” “IRS” “Form 990”, select “www.guidestar.org” and select the PDF for the year you’re interested in. (Or just for fun, substitute any other 501 (C) (3) “non-profit” organization that you would like to know more about)
In 2018, Mr Peterson received reportable compensation (W2/1099 MISC) from the “non-profit” of $12,440. “Average hours per week” – one hour. In round figures: $240 per hour. Not too shabby.
I didn’t bother to go further down looking for Travel or Entertainment, you may if you want to. I did a number of 990’s in the 80’s/90’s when I worked for a well known tax return preparation company. They’re not too bad on paper forms – but piece-meal on a small screen – a right royal pain in the rear end.
Peterson is CEO of the organization.
A reason for allowing the Parents to teach their kids at Home or send them to a Private School that allows for both sides to be heard. This sounds to me like just a whole lot of Brainwashing/Indoctrination by their School Board Parents need to get their child out of those Indoctrination Centers we once called a School
Little commie/fascist Lincoln High School student Gaby Lemieux obviously never heard about the 1st Amendment. Soon they will start burning books they don’t like.
