The New York Times editorial board wasted no time attacking President Donald Trump’s rolling back of Obama-era global warming regulations in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
The NYTimes went after Trump for not acknowledging the supposed link between global warming and hurricanes before going on to extol a climate summit in San Francisco co-hosted by Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown.
“Uniting these leaders is a belief that human ingenuity can lead us out of a predicament that humans have helped create and a faith in collective action that is almost impossible to find on the Potomac,” the editorial board wrote Sunday.
However, editorial board’s praise for Brown’s climate summit came two days after one NYTimes correspondent reported: “that even those in the green space sometimes cling to carbon-based conveniences.”
Seattle City Councilman Mike O’Brien, who attended the Global Climate Action Summit, told the Times, “some attendees commuted in oversize sport utility vehicles, while he grabbed an electric bike on multiple occasions to get around.”
Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber was the “lone passenger” on a “full-size electric bus with its flashing digital sign proclaiming ‘zero emissions,’” he told The NYTimes. He rode the electric bus all alone for the 1.5 miles from his hotel to the summit’s location.
Of course, it might make sense that governors, mayors, and other elected officials might use fossil-fueled transport to get themselves and their security detail to the three-day summit, which kicked off Wednesday.
However, most people attending the conference don’t need bodyguards or a big entourage. They choose to have them, and with that, fly private jets and ride in SUVs.
Indeed, San Francisco International Airport spokesman Doug Yakel told the San Francisco Chronicle that “corporate jet traffic was up 30 percent over normal” during the time of the summit.
With notables like former Vice President Al Gore, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, actor Alec Baldwin, and others, you can expect private jet traffic to spike.
The Chronicle compared the bump in corporate jet travel to when Brown flew “with real estate mega-millionaire and major Democratic Party donor George Marcus via private jet to a climate change conference at the Vatican” in 2015.
The editorial board, however, did not mention its own paper’s reporting while extolling the actions of climate crusading politicians at the California summit.
The board called the summit “a bright spot in a week dominated by atmospheric fury in the Carolinas and political fecklessness in Washington.”
“Unlike the Paris summit, the meeting had no power to set goals or to legally commit anyone to do anything to reduce emissions. What it did have was messaging power. And the message was one of defiance as well as concern,” the editorial board wrote.
