Environmentalists are pulling support from an upcoming climate debate after one of the liberal media outlets sponsoring the event published an op-ed mocking Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg’s homosexuality.
The New Republic and Gizmodo were scheduled to host a presidential climate summit in September to discuss presidential candidates’ policies addressing global warming.
Environmentalists are now bailing after The New Republic posted an article Friday calling South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Buttigieg “Mary Pete.”
“The offensive piece by this author, and the choice to run it, are inconsistent with our values,” Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation Voters, said in a press statement Saturday. “We will remain focused on the important work of elevating the climate crisis in this election and encouraging all the candidates to be prioritizing solutions.”
Several environmental groups, including the political arms of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Earthjustice, yanked their support for the event.
Karpinski’s group is also pulling back from the event as activists worry Democratic candidates are giving short shift to climate change.
The blog post, written by Dale Peck, shocked many regular readers. The magazine replaced the article with an editor’s note calling the piece “inappropriate and invasive.”
New Republic editor in chief Win McCormack offered Buttigieg his “sincerest apologies” Saturday.

Gizmodo also distanced itself from The New Republic, telling readers in a post-Saturday that the climate summit would go on without the involvement of the magazine.
Both publications had begun recruiting presidential candidates after announcing the date of the forum.
The New Republic dropped out of the forum.
“G/O Media would welcome the groups who dropped out to rejoin so their important voices can be heard,” Gizmodo’s parent company said in a statement. “We understand and share their indignation but hope to move forward with the best possible partners.”
Neither Earthjustice nor the NRDC responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment addressing the matter.

Environmental issues have nothing to do with homosexuality. The reaction of the so called environmental organizations to New Republic’s comments clearly shows that these groups have been taken over and transformed into advocacy groups for the progressive movement. There is a great deal of evidence for this theory. So called environmental groups now support windmills that kill millions of birds, cutting down forests for biofuel, and the use of toxic elements for solar cells and batteries for electric cars. One unfortunately result is that the truly legitimate environmental issues such as loss of habit are being ignored.
Extreme green is Kryptonite to the Democrats . Even Steyer will prertend other interests because the New Green Deal bombed badly .
Democrats are drifting hard left losing the moderates . Any union leader that supports these anti American job killers should be turfed . How do most workers make out in commie countries Union leaders ? Or is that your plan ?
How committed to these “green” new deals could they really be if that’s all it takes to change their course? Or are they starting to realize they won’t win with those economy destroying policies and used it as an excuse?
The only way to handle the Leftist onslaught is to ramp up the humor — make fun of them. They are easy pickings.
Not sure you have to go as far as calling the gay guy Mary Pete. He is proud of his sexuality, so why that bothers him is beyond me.
But there is ample room for other ways to make fun of their stances. Global Warming is the one ripe low hanging fruit for this.
