“A gas shortage threatens the Long Island region,” bleat six Long Island state senators, all Democrats, in a letter pleading for approval of a pipeline proposed to fix the problem — belatedly admitting that the policies they’ve long favored don’t work for their own constituents.
This year, Sens. Todd Kaminsky, John Brooks, James Gaughran, Anna Kaplan, Monica Martinez, and Kevin Thomas all voted for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Green New Deal law, whose very purpose is to further crimp energy supplies, and for a $100 million hike in taxes on energy.
And, as Senate GOP leader John Flanagan (their fellow Long Islander) notes, all were AWOL when the Williams pipeline was up for consideration by the state Department of Environmental Conservation — which recently issued a pseudo-scientific veto of the project.
Or maybe anti-scientific is the right word: The DEC pretends the Williams pipeline is a threat to water quality. But it would run under New York Harbor roughly parallel to an existing pipeline (now at capacity).
The “lack of a reliable future natural-gas supply has the potential to upend the lives . . . halt economic development, and adversely result in the use of dirtier forms of energy,” the Democrats write in begging for “emergency” approval of the pipeline.
Of course, it does. But the Long Island Six, like most New York Democratic electeds, have long pretended otherwise.
Kaminsky, for example, chairs the Senate’s Environmental Conservation Committee, and sponsored a recent bill to “prohibit oil- and natural-gas drilling in New York’s coastal area” and “restrict the power of . . . corporations to develop pipelines associated with the delivery of natural gas or oil” in or even near the state.
Never mind that National Grid, the utility for the area, warned this summer that it was unable to deliver more natural gas to Long Island unless the state OK’d the pipeline, and specifically said it would have to stop taking new customers.
Democrats from Cuomo on down treated that as a bluff, or a threat — and then turned around and blamed the utility when it followed through.
But now Winter Is Coming. The Democratic county executives of Nassau and Suffolk have belatedly called for the pipeline to go through and joined the business community in pleading for support of the six senators.
Hence their belated plea for approval of the pipeline: “National Grid’s moratorium has already impacted thousands of our constituents,” they complain — as if their own policies hadn’t forced the moratorium.
But just this one. “This is the last gas pipeline that will merit your review as our state transitions to a renewable-energy economy,” they write. Guess any other part of New York (like Westchester) that faces similar issues is just plumb out of luck.
What a pathetic pack of hypocrites.

You covered a lot of ground there, CW. You would know, first hand, what environmental regulations can do to a business’s bottom line. My tractors are pre-1985. I won’t give up on them, rebuild and keep them. My neighbour wore out his Ford F250, replaced it with a late-model, emissions crippled. He hates it.
That’s one of the saddest situations you’ll see, a man who hates his truck.
I guess you can call me a whistle blower but this is really funny NOT ONE PERSON HAS CHALLENGED MY THEORY NO MEDIA WILL INTERVIEW. 2000 some of the Diesel 3/4 and 1 ton pickup would get 20-22mpg average I had one by the way. Lets go to 2015 where EPA Oboma California And Clean Air Activist have enforced emissions standards now the same class of pickups gets 8-10mpg by the way i own one. If you take all the emissions off power increased and guess what it jumps back up to anywhere from 18-24mpg by the way my best friend owns one. Let use a 11mpg decrease on 100,000 mile and by the way there are some 2015 models that have 200000 miles on them. 100,000 miles divided by 11 is 9090.90 extra gallons of fuel now lets do 10,000 pickup since my calculator won’t do 100,000 that equals 90,909,000 extra gallons of fuel burned. Some are increasing 5.5mpg so cut it in half. No big deal right but how does the fuel get to the pumps ding ding ding trucks. Well now to haul the extra fuel from rails to pumps 90,909,000 divided by 6000 gallons average because of weight limits thats 15,151 extra transports of fuel. Now what motor is in the transports a fully emissions motor that if you delete it guess what 2 mpg increase. Let take a truck to 1,000,000 miles most have more thats 500,000 extra gallons per truck since my calculator won’t go that high 500,000 gallons divided by 6,000 gallons is 83.33 transports of fuel per truck running 1,000,000 miles now lets say in the us there are 100,000 running in the US so now to make up for 2mpg loss on 100,000 transports it will take 8,333,333 transports hmmm let that sink in but wait they haul 6,000 gallons my calculator don’t go that high. Now add the number of transports for 10,000 pickup and 100,000 trucks 8,333,333 plus the 15,151 thats 8,348,484 transports hauling 6000 gallons. But that’s not all California bans drinking straws my pickup used about 10 gallons of Diesel Exhaust Fluid every 3-4 tanks of diesel when i work my new Case IH tractor hard i can use up to 50 gallons a day of Diesel exhaust fluid which is urea fertilizer and water who is one of the biggest producers of urea fertilizer in the US THE KOCH BROTHERS BINGO. Where does urea come from natural gas another win for big oil go to a gas station and look at the 2 – 2.5 gallons jugs it comes in with its big plastic straw so you have 20-25 plastic jugs daily to go to the land fill it will come in 225 gallon totes but someone is making big money off the pumps for the 225 gallon totes and 55 gallon drums. The other day a representative or congresswoman was saying because of trumps tarriffs farmers had soybeans rotting in the bins in 1993 a 300hp tractor cost around $100,000 had metal hoods and fenders a lot of them had 7-10,000 hours before major engine repairs now they cost over $300,000 and have plastic fenders burn more fuel and they cannot keep them running because of the emissions junk hmm let that sink in. I own a 1999 model Peterbilt it has a cat motor it lasted 1,275,822 miles before being reb uilt in 2005 the motors had egr the motors got 600,000-700,000 miles before being rebuilt now lets jump to late 2007 egr wasn’t enough they Diesel partlicant filter well guess what most were junk somewhere around the year 2010 Caterpillar QUIT MAKING TRUCK MOTORS.
Long story short the EPA ,ELECTED OFFICIALS IN CONGRESS AND THE HOUSE KOCH INDUSTRIES ,CLEAN AIR Activist, are getting rich off of Diesel particalant filters and def the push for all of this was to decrease emissions but how ,were burning more fuel to support the emissions standards now think about this we only talked about from fuel rail to the pumps how much did big oil make. What happened the other day when Trump said he was wanting to do away with some emissions rules. What happened every democrat leader blew up EPA was going to challenge it. These are the facts from the field not some pencil pushing retard with authority. They want to push that the terriffs on how much they hurt the $8 a bushel soy bean farmers try growing $3.50 a bushel wheat. It’s not tariffs its extra fuel and equipment cost tractors have tripled combines have quadrupled part of it is extra cost to meet EPA REGULATIONS the equipment cost more because the emissions parts required by the government are failing under warranty. Here are some more facts
John Deere combines new 1998 89,000 2018 over $400,000 they yes 1 new one will cut what 2 used to 1998 metal shields and side panels 2018 plastic
John Deere tractors depending on options 1998 a right around $100,000 2018 just under $300,000
Great Plains Drill 2007 $35,000 2018 $80,000 metal didn’t go up that much and blades are made cheaper
30’ disk 1998 around $30,000 2018 $80,000 again Chinese bearings cheap metal blades that don’t last as long
John Deere round baler 2002 $24,700 priced one last week $45,000 bearings made cheap in China and one in scandiava the 2002 baler most bearings lasted to around 10,000 bales now some don’t make 3500 bales and go out Trump stood up for the farmers with the tariffs more than people realize part of the reason of the tariffs was China was sending over cheap parts that don’t last that are junk. I sure someone will try to turn everything around to say how much it is helping greenhouse gasses because they reduced them coming out of the tail pipe but remember on the pickups because of loss in miles per gallons they almost need to double what is coming out. Why is there more bad stuff going in the air because of the extra fuel burned, what I don’t know is how much emissions the refineries put off to make it. And by the way I had a 2008 Ford 3/4 ton that would get 13mpg on the farm because of the Obama administration push for fuel economy Ford had to quit putting that motor in the 3/4 and 1 tons guess what I also owed a 2013 Chevy 1 ton with the 6.0 gas 8mpg. Their buddies got rich because of developing this junk emissions equipment that fails thinking their hurting the big oil companies they have made big mistake. Now that being said if you want come out i will let you take each for a 100 mile drive i only figured 10,000 pickups and 100,000 in reality there are over 1,000,000 pickups on the road today take the 8,348,484 fuel transports times 100,000 then times 6000 gallons for the total gallons fuel burned then use the figure 83.33 fuel transports for every truck on the road today you have to have products at the stores anything that you buy was on a truck at one point even the auto mobile you drive so 83.33 fuel transports times 6000 gallons times every truck equipped with clean exhaust probably in the us it will be over a half million let that sink in 83.33 times 6000.
If the fuel prices stay the same 500,000 gallons of fuel $2.67 a gallon that mean big oil made $1,335,000 just off of 1 truck driving a million miles that i have to pay extra because of someone not doing the math. I realize the green new deal is good but you will still have to have trucks to move product. I know that they say high speed rail but let this sink in that will mean you will have to have steel to make rail how do you heat the steel natural gas they did a experimental section of rail in my area with cement ties and asphalt good deal right but it takes oil to make asphalt more trucks moving the product for cement ties now you say use wooden have you added up how many trees will have to be cut down for a tie every 3-6” apart how will you get the electricity coal fired natural gas or will it be solar or wind on cloudy days my solar pumps don’t work when the wind doesn’t blow wind won’t work and you will increases the amount of oil needed to cool the wind turbines. Every electric transformer has oil in it. I agree that we have to do things to help the environment but killing every tree to make railroad ties I don’t know if that’s the answer. It would be interesting to see how many railroad ties are made in the us each year and by the way back on the Diesel exhaust fluid they say that the burned urea is killing the bees which pollinate the plants
It is not unusual for people to make decisions based on stupid ideals, and then reverse those decisions when they face the consequences. However, it wasn’t much of a reversal since “This is the last gas pipeline that will merit your review as our state transitions to a renewable-energy economy,” They still have no idea of reality. They are incapable of learning from places like Australia that doubled its cost of power in order to go to an unreliable grid.
The environmental risks they assumed is some of the worst fake science out there. Natural gas is a “gas.” It is gas that is lighter than air. If there is a rupture natural gas ends up going up and away from the ground.
Time to fix the ‘keep it in ground’ creeps. Delay that gas pipeline for years. Can’t trust New York legislators, demand ironclad assurances. Give THEM the runaround, for a change.
With any luck, there will be a normal New York winter and an awful lot of people will experience gas and heat interruptions and cold homes. Ah what the heck, lowering thermostats to 60 degrees is good for their health. If the have gas stoves, be ready on a moment’s notice to start making breakfast or lunch or dinner.
Greenpeace idiots still fuel their ships and Zodiacs with Fossil Fuels
Need to vote these idiots out of office.
Lay the gas shortage on Greenpeace and the rest of the No Fracking,NO Drilling Keep it in the Ground groups of idiots with their fossil Fuels painted signs with the stupid finger pointing at the ground let them feel the effects of their worshiping a false god called The Earth the Earth is Not Your Mother Got That Nit-Wit?
Well, when the lights are out and the heat if off in thousands of luxury apartments & coffee shops this winter in NYC, don’t BLAME your energy PROVIDERS. Place your “angst” against the folks responsible, namely short sighted politicians & government officials and all those environmental NGO’s that have blocked your access to reliable & affordable energy. Bad decisions have consequences in this arena…
They can all just put on an extra sweater and turn their thermostats down to 65 degrees, just like President Carter exhorted us all to do in the late ’70s
