Former vice president and presidential candidate Kamala Harris famously said, “Oceans are warming. Sea levels are rising… We must take steps to mitigate against sea level rise and prepare for the extreme weather that has become increasingly common.”
But last month, Harris threw that warning out the window by purchasing an eight-million-dollar seaside mansion in Malibu with “breathtaking ocean views”.
The mansion houses a gas stove, a tankless (on-demand) water heater, and a fireplace. The Biden-Harris administration put regulations into place that would have banned about half of all gas stove models. It would have banned about 40% of tankless water heaters.
A climate model released by the Biden-Harris administration predicts that Point Dume State Beach, located near this property, would face severe flooding due to rising sea levels.
During her presidential campaign in 2019, Harris wrote, “Extreme weather is destroying our communities. We are poisoning the planet.”
When she was a senator, Harris was a cosponsor of “The Living Shorelines Act,” which would set aside $50 million per year for climate mitigation, remarking that our country is facing a climate crisis.
Shortly thereafter, she shared a Washington Post article describing rising temperatures and sea level as well as extreme weather — especially in Ventura County, California, where her new property lies. This article claims that the temperature in Ventura County has risen 2.6°C. since 1895.
We have entered the era of climate consequences. From rising sea levels to extreme weather to rising temperatures and more—climate change is here and we must act now. https://t.co/Cl4vZMMAKk

While she was Vice President, Harris was the chief spokesperson for the ClimateReady Coasts Initiative, a program that provided large grants for projects dealing with climate change in coastal areas of the United States. In April of 2023, this project issued 149 such grants, totaling $562 million.
She announced this grant program while visiting the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science in Florida.
At that time, she also remarked, “To live in a coastal community is to live on the front lines of the climate crisis.”
“All of this makes sense, it works, and it is very doable,” Harris said. “Through these investments, we will help safeguard Florida’s natural beauty—its oceans, beaches, and coral reefs. And all of this, so that Miami remains a must-see destination for tourists worldwide.”
It was a pleasure to tour the @MiamiRosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.

It was revealed that Rosenstiel received a $7.5 million grant through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), part of the Department of Defense, “to explore using hybrid reef structures to protect military bases and coastlines,” – all this because of the incorrect prediction that sea level rise has been accelerating.
Also in 2023, the Biden-Harris administration published a report concluding that up to 75% of the beaches in California could be completely eroded by the year 2100.
Harris is following in the footsteps of other powerful people, such as Barack Obama, who bought oceanfront properties in both New England and Hawaii.
Perhaps she is excited about living on the climate crisis front lines.
