Gov. Jay Inslee (D., Wash.) acknowledged Tuesday that greenhouse-gas emissions have increased during his gubernatorial tenure.
When Inslee announced his presidential campaign, he said it’s because he’s the only candidate who will make “defeating climate change our nation’s No. 1 priority.”
On MSNBC’s All In Tuesday, he attributed the increase in Washington emissions to the 130,000 people who moved to the state.
“We have taken big steps. We’ve now built a wind turbine industry to $6 billion. We’re the most per-capita, biggest users of electric cars. We’re spinning carbon fiber to go into electric cars. I just got to cut the ribbon of our largest solar farm, and we’re making bio-fuels—you can fly airplanes on biofuels now,” Inslee said. “We need to do more.”
MSNBC host Chris Hayes did not appear convinced by the list of environmental steps Inslee was listing off.
“Doing a lot is not enough. This is the whole problem with this problem. I have been hearing you’re doing a lot for a long time. They’ve got to go down,” Hayes said.
“What do you say to someone who says, ‘Look, you’ve had the chance to bring emissions down in your state and you haven’t done it. How the heck are you going to do it with a Republican Senate maybe or in the even-more-difficult-to-manage federal government?'” Hayes asked.
Inslee, who has been serving as the governor since 2013, said Washington voters have finally given him a Democratic majority in the legislature, where they have proposed several bills to “move the needle” on decreasing emissions in the state.
He went on to say he hopes Hayes has him on his show in a couple of months so they can “pop the champagne corks” to celebrate the progress they will have made.
Inslee went on to talk about the importance of getting rid of the filibuster in Congress, saying it will only stop Democrats from “saving the planet.” He said jettisoning the “antiquated” filibuster is “absolutely necessary if we’re going to defeat this beast.”
The Seattle Times reported earlier this year that that emissions increased about 6.1 percent between 2012 and 2015.

“(CNN) Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee announced Friday that he is running for President, launching a bid in which he intends to make combating climate change the central rationale for his campaign.”
“Gov. Jay Inslee implored lawmakers Tuesday to make bold moves to combat climate change.”
“The second-term Democratic governor is considering a presidential bid that would emphasize a national call to reverse climate change. This legislative session will show if he can finally bring his BIGGEST ideas to fruition in his own state.”
“State law requires greenhouse-gas emissions to return to 1990 levels by next year. But new numbers reveal that emissions have increased about 6.1 percent from 2012-2015. That rise is due in part to more fossil fuel-generated electricity and a roaring economy, according to the Washington Department of Ecology.”
Reverse climate change! “The governor cited the WARMING OCEANS and the WILDFIRES that have either ravaged Washington lands or dirtied the skies in recent years as the new normal — unless swift action is taken.
Well, since the rise is due in part (what part of the 6.1 percent rise is not defined????) to more fossil fuel-generated electricity and a roaring economy and (Washington) State law Mandates greenhouse-gas emissions to return to 1990 levels by 2020, the BIGGEST solution Inslee has available to him is stopping all fossil fuel-generated electricity and destroy Washington state’s economy.
Look out Joe!! If Inslee can finally bring his BIGGEST ideas to fruition and get Washington states emissions down to 1990 levels his presidential candidate aspirations will be assured!
Can Inslee really FLAT LINE Seattle???? Just keep an eye on CO2 levels (courtesy of NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory’s carbon dioxide sensor on the top of the Seattle Space Needle). The Daily Graph shows data collected every 5 minutes over the last 72 hours on the Space Needle and as the variability in atmospheric CO2 over Seattle are related to human activities in and around the city we ALL will be able to monitor just how close Inslee is getting to be “the” Dems presidential candidate.
Zero chance for this delusional goof .
Even the huggers in Washington said screw you to this temperature
adjusting pretender . … Twice .
Number 1 priority ? Really . is that the price to be bankrolled by California flakes ?
Last I looked it was at about 10th on a list of the public concerns .
Somewhere around how do they get the caramel in cadbury bars .
Talk about not reading your audience . He is about 10 years late in an
inconvenient time warp . Yep Grandpa planned to set the earths
temperature by reducing a trace gas . What a legacy .
Twice Washington voters rejected a tax on carbon dioxide emissions, yet Inslee is hoping to implement it through the legislator. It shows the elitist, pompous attitude of believing he knows what is best and the hell with the will of the people.
The reality is such a tax is unlikely to be implemented. Washington State has a referendum process where legislation that is passed and signed by the governor can be forced to a vote of the people if enough signatures are gathered. They can get around the referendum by declaring the legislation to be an emergency, but that requires a 60% majority.
Inslee is right that increasing population makes reducing emissions more difficult, but he hasn’t learned anything from it. Nationally the only reason the population of the US is going up is due to immigration. I’m sure he doesn’t support stopping immigration. Thus, he is willing to let this source of emissions continue to increase which requires extra sacrifice to make up for it.
Inslee also hasn’t learned anything from Germany. Their people are suffering from a three times increase in power rates yet Germany’s emissions have barely gone down.
Inslee also hasn’t learned anything from how the Trump administration has handled this country. With no taxes on emissions and a booming economy the US has reduced emissions more than most industrial nations.
Of course the biggest thing Inslee hasn’t learned is there is no need to reduce emissions. In recent history there is a poor correlation between carbon dioxide levels and temperature data, but a high correlation between temperature and solar output.
Perhaps the root of the increased CO2 emissions is people like me, who completely scoff at human-caused global warming while and completely understand that atmospheric carbon dioxide does not affect climate, so we seek out ways to increase out output INTENTIONALLY. It is so much fun to irritate these liberal fools!
And just like that, he will come in last.
If Washington implemented a stiff carbon tax, they could reduce some of that pesky population. They would either leave or freeze. Either way, problem solved.
Spend a ton of money and not do anything to reduce plant food, er, CO2 into the atmosphere.
What to do!?
I know…spend more!
