The most recent six-month update has just been published.
Despite a multi-billion-euro price tag, Germany’s attempts to ditch fossil fuels isn’t going well. At all.
Only six of the transition’s 14 goals (43%) appear achievable by 2020. Here are the two absolutely critical data points:
#1 – Germany’s CO2 emissions reduction targets won’t be met.
#2 – Its previously robust electricity grid is now vulnerable and insecure.
The story of Germany’s energy transition boils down to this: Something that used to work well has been deliberately broken, undermined, degraded, and crippled. A ton of money has been spent. To make things worse.
Over at Forbes, Michael Shellenberger discusses how this latest report card is being covered in the German press. In his words:
One of Germany’s largest newspapers, Die Welt, summarized the findings of the McKinsey report in a single word: “disastrous.”
…German electricity prices are 45% above the European average…Green taxes account for 54% of household electricity prices.
Here in Canada, the media is tripping all over itself to publicize the fact that a Swedish 16-year-old will march against climate change in Montreal later this month (see here, here, here, and here).
Those news reports don’t bother to inform the public that Greta Thunberg is from an extraordinarily dysfunctional family in which children tell adults they aren’t permitted to use the toilet.
Nor do they mention that the only way to achieve a zero-carbon lifestyle is to shut down human civilization.
No more heating. Or cooking. Or water sanitation. Or quality-controlled medicine. Or refrigeration. Or surgery. Nor more daily transportation to work or school. No more shipping of food from places where it’s abundant to places where it’s scarce. No more visiting relatives in the hospital, the next town, the next country, or on the next continent.
These news reports don’t bother to mention that Germany is the textbook example of what happens when a nation tries to fight climate change by substituting renewable energy for fossil fuels.
Lots of pain, murderous prices, unachievable goals, and increased risk, worry, fear, and misery.
Journalists have no excuse. There’s no conceivable reason for them to be unaware of these issues. Which means they’re either unforgivably lazy – or they’re deliberately withholding relevant information from the public.

Germany is in a disasterous state. Its people being told they need to change the climate; a reverse change. Told by treacherous politicians they trust – as in the ’30ies when Hitler came to power. Told by institutes like the PIK – the name of which is self-explanatory “Potsdamer Institute on Climate Change Consequences” – in which Chancellor Merkel puts her trust. Told by a very left-green media who do not question main stream opinions as such.
All the greens and their flagship Greta Thunberg say is “We must act now!”
The situation reminds me of Lemmings jumping off a cliff. This disarranged loud group of nuts – sadly almost all political groups – is asking of us to jump off the plane and hope – on our way down – someone will invent a parachute!
Germany’s experience should show the world that going to wind and solar power doesn’t work. As I have said many times, liberals are incapable of learning from the mistakes of others if it undermines their agendas. The Germans obviously are among those incapable of learning. According to a recent article on this web site Germany will probably spend billions more on renewable energy.

Germany, Ontario, same mess.
Last year, the stacks of the coal-fired Nanticoke Generating Station were dynamited. August 22, the steel structure was dynamited in a big cloud of dust. $68 million to obliterate a $1 billion dollar asset. Why? The Liberals wanted to make sure that it never burned fossil fuels again.
The press was given a safe area to record the death of Nanticoke GS.
The location ensured that the solar panels erected on the former site of coal pile would be in the foreground of all pictures and video. Oh, the irony.
“It’s the end of an era for coal but the beginning of an era for renewable generation on the site” gushed Neil Kelly, director of media for Ontario Power Generation.
” The closure of Nanticoke Generating Station remains one of North America’s single largest climate change inititiatives. Building and sustaining a clean low cost electricity system is fundamental to a healthy environment and a strong, low carbon economy” gloated Mike Martelli, OPG president of Renewable Generation.
They have made electricity more expensive, “low – cost” was not a priority. The Liberals wanted to brag to their global counterparts that they were the first to shut down coal. In their rush, they signed some horrible supply contracts from companies like Samsung. If our electricity is clean and affordable , it’s because it’s subsidized by the people who pay taxes .
I hate these people.
I though Germans were smarter than this .
Of course we need to try and improve the environment but broke countries don’t
when people are suppressed and they are destroyed economically .
When countries put their citizens in a eat or heat world the country and the environment loses . The MSM are propaganda tools for socialists . Maybe it’s because their business model is being threatened .
Notice how the MSM never talks about the 10’s of thousands of fuel poverty deaths caused by government policy pretending to set the earths temperature .

I think most people (including the press and the left-wing politicians) are totally ignorant about how the world works, where the water comes from when they open the tap, how the food gets to the grocery store, and where the gas and electricity comes from when they turn on the stove and flip on the lights.
