Greenpeace activists boarded an Arctic oil rig Monday to protest fossil fuel emissions and call for more action to fight climate change.
The rig, owned and operated by the company Seadrill, was commissioned by the Norwegian oil company Equinor. Four activists jumped on the rig stationed in Arctic waters off the coast of Norway, Reuters reports.
“Drilling for oil in the Arctic while the region melts faster than ever is complete madness. We face a climate emergency and need to stop oil drilling, and that’s why we are peacefully protesting today,” Greenpeace Norway head Frode Pleym said in a statement.
“Our primary concern is the health and safety of all personnel onboard the rig. We will continue to monitor the situation and have notified the local authorities, including the police,” Seadrill told Reuters.
It is unclear if any arrests have been made.
The activists allegedly kayaked out to the rig before boarding it with banners saying “people versus oil” and “ban new oil.” The Seadrill rig was due to begin operations in the near future.
The Greenpeace occupation of the oil rig comes as climate activists, led by the group Extinction Rebellion, continue to protest in London against Britain’s climate change policies. Extinction Rebellion is set to protest outside the British parliament alongside the youth climate activist group Momentum, according to The Guardian.
Extinction Rebellion’s protests have continued for weeks, straining police resources and disrupting the city.
“The demonstration has had an impact on the police and Londoners in general. Lots of people have had miserable disruption to their lives,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick told Sky News on April 21.
“I have never — I’ve been a police officer for 36 years — I have never known an operation, a single operation, in which over 700 people have been arrested,” Dick said.

Where were the roughnecks and their fire hoses. Blow the trespassers right off the rig. The Rig supervisor needs to be reminded of his priorities.
I hope the crew replaced them peacefully back into the ocean they came from, with harmless fire hoses, etc. The Russians dealt far better with these ridiculous delusionals. Time the Western democracies toughened up responses to the eco zealots? Start by putting them in jail and confiscating or sinking all their boats a la Putin?
Remember this is the same Greenpeace that ruined the Nazca Plains with his stupid message and they used Plastic Greenpeace is way too radical its no wonder one of origional founders Patrick Moore quit this group of Crinimals this bunch belongs in jail
Gosh, if the temperatures are getting warmer then why do these fascists think the workers need protection? It would seem that with warmer temps those drilling in the arctic would be very happy!
Isn’t the great lie really that these clowns pretend they are going to stop the Arctic from melting faster ? The Arctic ice melted before humans burned fossil fuels and it will do again when natural variables driving the direction of earths climate conspire to do so .
Are they really trying to have people believe limiting use of a trace gas
will stop the climate from changing in the direction THEY wish ?
There are serious issues we have some ability to change and improve in our environment but killing 10’s of thousands of people through fuel poverty and wasting $trillions on an overblown fraud steals resources and is morally despicable .
No doubt that zodiac they were using was electric powered .
Not only electric powered but the batteries were charged from solar panels!
What were their Kayaks made from? Plastic? which is derived from Fossil Fuel and their big ships still operate on Fossil Fuels The Hypocricy of Greenpeace stands our like sore thumb I wonder of these jerks know that
