Plans to develop the UK’s first new deep coal mine in decades have been given the go-ahead by the government.
The Woodhouse Colliery would process around 2.5 million tonnes of coking coal a year, expected to replace imports from the US, Canada, Colombia, and Russia.
The Woodhouse Colliery would extract coking coal from the seabed off St Bees, with a processing plant on the former Marchon site at Kells.
West Cumbria Mining (WCM) said the Ministry of Housing would not “call in” the application already approved by the Cumbria County Council despite objections from green groups.
It added the mine would help create around 500 jobs in the area.
The company said in a statement:
“WCM can now start the process of delivering on its plan to build one of the most modern mines in the world. It will supply the UK and international steel industry, deliver hundreds of local jobs and deliver a first-class supply chain across the country.”

Considering the recent success of the environmental radicals in the UK, I find it surprising that they are going ahead with a new coal mine. If the coal is just replacing what is being imported from other nations, then there would be no impact on emissions, but since when was the environmental left that logical. Having declared a “climate crisis” I’m sure that the UK isn’t in a position to know that carbon dioxide emissions are not a problem.
Let those Anti Fossil Fuels,Anti Fracking,Anti Drilling keep it in the Ground idiots go to Africa and ell them they can do without Fossil Fuels and they will probibly get spit on
As the UK has significant reserves of coal reversing Maggie Thatchers vindictive closing of mines and building some modern coal fired power stations would seem to be eminently sensible and sustainable, at least for the next couple of centuries. That would give plenty of time to provide some truly low impact, long term sustainable solutions for energy supply.
The fact of the matter is that CO2 doesn’t change the weather or climate, so dig the coal and frack for natural gas. Doesn’t matter.
So its OK to drive girt great tunnels through rock but not OK to make tiny plate sized holes in deep structures to extract shale gas that causes “tremors” about 100 times below anything significant? How does that work? Where are the eco loonies?
I was going to point this out. No to fracking, and producing clean burning natural gas, but yes to coal. Unbelievable.
