Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler on Monday warned in a letter sent to California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) that his executive order banning gas-powered vehicles may be unlawful, Reuters reports.
Wheeler wrote that Newsom’s plan “raises serious questions regarding its legality and practicality” and argued that it may cause further issues problems plaguing the state’s electrical grid.
“California’s record of rolling blackouts – unprecedented in size and scope – coupled with recent requests to neighboring states for power begs the question of how you expect to run an electric car fleet that will come with significant increases in electricity demand when you can’t even keep the lights on today,” the Trump official stated.
Newsom has yet to reply to the EPA.
As of Monday afternoon, approximately 87,500 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers in California were without power in an effort to avoid starting additional wildfires, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Last week, Newsom announced that the state will ban sales of gas-powered vehicles in 2035, calling the order an “audacious” goal that was necessary for the state to operate on 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.
The plan won’t stop people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But in 2035 it would end the sale of all new such vehicles in the state of nearly 40 million people. That accounts for more than one out of every 10 new cars sold in the U.S.
California would be the first state with such a mandate, while at least 15 other countries have already made similar commitments, including Germany, France, and Norway.

They need to make that idiot Newsom to walk to all his big time functions if this screwball is so concerned about this Global warming/Climate Change scam
The moron Newsom admitted just a few weeks ago that “renewables” weren’t cutting it; hence the blackouts. California hasn’t built a new conventional generating plant in a coon’s age and as far as anyone can tell has no plans to ever authorize such a venture, is about to shut down its remaining nuclear plants, and is contemplating junking some of its hydroelectric plants. Where exactly is the electricity to run this wave of electric cars supposed to come from, unicorn farts?
“…Newsom’s plan “raises serious questions regarding its legality and practicality”…”
I guess if you can ban drinking straws you can ban gasoline powered automobiles – as far a ‘legality’ is concerned.
‘Practicality’? Every ‘out-of-state’ visitor or foreign tourist will be driving a gas powered vehicle. If gas stations are few and far between because there’s no longer enough demand to stay in business, then who’s going to want the hassle of visiting anything in California? Disneyland? Universal Studios? The Queen Mary? The Redwoods?
Currently there is a state tax on each gallon of ‘fossil fuel’ that is purchased in CA. It is supposed to be used for road maintenance. How will ‘electric’ vehicles be taxed?
And going the other way – will Californians always have the recharge stations available when they head interstate? Or do they rent other vehicles at the border?
A former Labor Prime Minister copped criticism here in Australia for saying, some years ago, that abolishing the state governments may well be necessary. Fast forward a decade or so and we now have a state Labor Premier in Victoria (no relative centrist in government like his federal predecessor) effectively shutting down the whole state, including internally (and the capital from the regions), thanks to his mishandling of the Covid response.
Conservatives criticised the moderate left ex-PM’s stance all those years ago, but the hard left are the ones who ultimately benefited most from that criticism, as they find it easier to be elected to a state parliament than a federal one.
By the mileage driven. Other have implemented or proposed doing away with the gasoline tax due to the number of electric cars on their roads.
Other states.
Newsom is a idiot and a Liberal Democrat and acting more like Dictator and frankly he needs to be removed from office like we did with Grey Davis
The Spurwing motion is seconded.
At least we would be free of the expensive regulations CA has placed on normal cars. That’s a plus and we can build cars elsewhere as we like.
