A new study finds rising CO2 concentrations (and warming) have driven the rapid increase in Earth’s photosynthesis processes, or greening.
CO2-induced planetary greening leads to an enormous expansion of Earth’s carbon sink.
By 2100 this greening-sink effect will offset 17 years of equivalent human CO2 emissions.
This easily supersedes the effect of the Paris Agreement’s CO2-mitigation policies.
In a break from the deflating global news of viral infections and rising death rates, a groundbreaking new study (Haverd et al., 2020) affirms the “beneficial role of the land carbon sink in modulating future excess anthropogenic CO2 consistent with the target of the Paris Agreement” via the fertilization effect of rising CO2.
There has been a 30% rise in global greening since 1900. CO2 fertilization is the “dominant driver” of these greening trends, with an additional positive contribution from climate warming.
When CO2 levels double (to 560 ppm), this CO2-fertilization-greening effect is expected to increase to 47%.
Growth in the land’s carbon sink – absorbing excess CO2 emissions – will reach 174 PgC by the end of the century.
This is the equivalent of eliminating 17 full years of human CO2 emissions.

There are simple concepts that often escape thought. If you are growing a crop in an arid environment and find a way to increase the water, often the yield will increase. That is because the plants haven’t been getting enough water. If your farm is in area with a lot rain, increasing water probably won’t increase the yield because the plants are getting plenty of water. We have seen that increasing carbon dioxide in both the natural world and green houses increases plant growth. That means plants are not getting enough CO2.
Extra absorption of carbon dioxide should be good new to anyone who believes in the climate change fraud. However, to the leftist, this is bad news. They will ignore it and their media puppets will support that. CO2 adsorption does nothing to further the cause of socialism, justify new taxes, transfer the wealth of the industrial nations to the developing nations, or impose extreme control over our lives by and hand full of self appointed elites.
From Wikipedia: PGC may refer to: PGC (gene) petagram (Pg) of Carbon – one Pg =10 to the 15th power grams=one billion metric tonnes.
Now there’s a unit that one doesn’t use on a daily basis.
I found another. Cubic mile of oil.
It’s useful as a comparison to other energy sources.
This may be a new study but the relationship between CO2 and life is 200 year old science. The authors’ statement that the “relative putative drivers of this increase are not well known” is baffling. Every biologist on earth should know this, or they aren’t worthy of the degree. There are two basic ingredient molecules to life on earth. They are water and CO2. Water is abundant. CO2 is life’s essential TRACE gas. It is rare. As many scientists including Freeman Dyson (RIP) have said “starvation” level rare. CO2 is not just fertilizer. It is the basic component of carbon-based lifeforms – life on earth – including us. More is ALWAYS BETTER. We’ve been naturally decreasing from 7000ppm for 600 million years (the Phanerozoic) down to our current ongoing Pleistocene/Holocene) Ice Age levels of 180-280ppm. (Rising coincidentally with temp during the late twentieth century, probably from our use of fossil fuels). As far as climate change is concerned a little more CO2 (120ppm) is insignificant. It hasn’t budged us one bit outside of our twelve thousand year-long natural Holocene interglacial. But in an environment naturally starving for it, a little more CO2 has been a Godsend. It is the basic material of life on earth. It is the backbone of every organic compound of life. Proteins, fats, cell membranes, DNA, RNA – everything. Major fertilizers in the crop and soil science perspective, are NPK&S (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and sulfur). Minor nutrients are copper, magnesium, boron, etc. CO2 is not a fertilizer. It is quite literally THE substance molecule of life on earth. As well as being the solar powered energy driving life on earth through photosynthesis. And if one considers all of the photosynthesis from the 70% water surface that built our oxygen rich (20%) atmosphere over the last one or two BILLION YEARS, imagine the “carbon sink” that is marine life. (Apparently not considered in this study). CO2 drives life. It has never driven the climate. CO2 does vary with temperature. It lags temperature by about 800 years. Because as temperature warms, CO2 outgasses from water. Again – a little more CO2 has been a Godsend.
Chlorophyll deserves a mention.
“CO2-induced planetary greening leads to an enormous expansion of Earth’s carbon sink.”
Good to know. There should be no shortage of toilet paper through 2100…;0)
Then the increase in plants means they emit more Oxygen for all other life on Earth – which the Climate Terrorists use up in vast amounts without giving it a thought.
Well said, they are leeches.
CO2 IS GOOD FOR THE PLANET IT PRODUCES MORE PLANTS WHICH SERVES FOR THE HERBIVORES THE PREDATORS DO WELL MORE PLANTS PRODUCE MORE BUGS FOR THE BIRDS AND NESTING SPOTS FOR THEM AS WELL
