U.S. carbon dioxide emissions shot up 3.4 percent in 2018, according to new estimates, but the uptick was largely due to a return to colder winter weather and booming manufacturing.
Emissions from manufacturing rose 5.7 percent from 2017 to 2018, according to Rhodium Group research released Tuesday. A booming economy also caused electricity demand to rise, causing emissions from that sector to jump 1.9 percent.
Most U.S. electricity comes from natural gas and coal, meaning increased demand also raises emissions.
Transportation sector emissions also rose, Rhodium reported, as “trucking and air travel increased demand for diesel and jet fuel by 3.1% and 3.0%, respectively.”
Part of the reason emissions rose in 2018 is because of a factor no policymaker can control — weather.
Rhodium noted that “[p]art of this was due to a colder winter” since the number of heat-degree days rose 15 percent in the winter of 2018. Commercial and residential building emissions rose 10 percent last year.
The rise in building emissions is because of higher heating fuel demand in 2018 after the relatively warm 2017 winter, meaning energy demand bounced back to what’s closer to normal for that time of year.
Winter 2018, however, was no walk in the park for many Americans. Winter storms hammered the East Coast, and frigid temperatures in New England strained the grid and pipeline system.
Rhodium’s estimate for U.S. emissions in 2018 are preliminary since federal energy data hasn’t been finalized. U.S. emissions would rise 2.5 percent on weather-related energy costs and a booming economy, the Global Carbon Project estimated in December.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicted U.S. emissions would likely rise 3 percent in 2018, according to its December outlook.
That estimate “largely reflects more natural gas consumption in 2018 for heating during a colder winter and for electric generation to support more cooling during a warmer summer than in 2017.”
However, EIA actually expects emissions to fall 1.2 percent in 2019 “because it forecasts that temperatures will return to near normal,” though economic growth and government policies could change that estimate.
The boom in manufacturing is good news for American workers, however, major media outlets sounded the alarm on global warming.

And in the NEA run schools they fill the kids heads full of these Climate Change/Global Warming lie and the Eco-Nazis/Watermelons tell the kids their parents are to blame because their not riding bicycles to work and their not going vegan i read about a science text book that was urging the kids to boycott McDonald’s over this Save the Rain Forests load of B.S. Its time to end the BRAINWASHING
The proof that global warming is a hoax is clear as the hand in front of your face. Remnants of ancient forests have been found in the debris of receding glaciers in Switzerland and British Columbia. Google this. It’s true. This is proof that temperatures were at least 3 degrees warmer when these forests were growing. The ice core data also shows us that carbon dioxide was below 300 PPM during these times. The only thing that can change the earth’s temperature that much is the sun. The earth’s orbit around the sun has a repeating cycle (known as the Milankovitch Cycle) which has a periodicity of roughly 100,000 years, which also happens to be the periodicity of currently glacial advances. The cycle is more complicated due to wobbles and sway of the earth’s orbit. Think of a top as it slows down.

Don’t get fooled by technology that finds more oil and gas. Fossil fuels are a finite source of energy. The human race could outlive the supply.
I’m not concerned about where the carbon dioxide comes from.
It’s primary role is plant food.
I’m not promoting green energy. It’s expensive and undependable. The installations have a huge environmental impact.
Better that all the money being wasted on wind mills be spent on fusion research instead
Sorry. I was distracted by fake media coverage of Trump’s televised FACTS.
“to eventually for” should read “to eventually form”
Gerry, I believe that we’re using fossil fuels faster than they’re forming. Sometime in the future, humans will need to adapt to this reality.
The carbon dioxide we’re producing will increase the creation of biomass. Our current annual energy consumption, from all sources, exceeds the energy produced in annual plant growth. California wastes huge amounts of biomass every year, allowing it to burn without harnessing its energy.
Huge amounts of capital have been spent only to prove that current Green Energy technologies are, at best, energy neutral. We’ll need some better solutions. We have time. Don’t squander that, too.
Gore bless you
I believe for every drop of rain that falls
A flower grows
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
A candle glows
I believe for everyone that goes astray
Someone will come to show the way
I believe
I believe……….
“Sometime in the future, humans will need to adapt to this reality.” Willingly most likely if you drank the Kool Aid but forcibly if necessary. That is the plan.
And who’s reality?? Gores??? I choose currently available technology and/or some real technological advancement that advances all mankind. Not LIES.
“The carbon dioxide we’re producing will increase the creation of biomass.” We are? Could the increased geological activity over the past several years account for any of that “additional CO2”?
Since you asked, if CO2 comprises about 0.04% of the atmosphere, what percent of 0.04% is our fossil fuel use responsible for?
“Don’t squander that, too.” Me??? Democrats are increasingly lining up behind New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s call for a “Green New Deal” Why not call your congress person?? Or do you believe “Green Energy” is THE answer and are willing to be taxed into living like a squirrel for an minimal energy solution?
And according to some fruitecakes Global Warming/Climate Change was Gaias punishment to America for voting for Trump just like those with those two Hurricanes Harvey and Irma back in 2017
“CO2 Emissions To Rise From Strong Economy, Colder Winter Weather”
CO2 emissions rising is good news.
“Research on geological storage of CO2 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”
“CO2 sequestration, also known as CO2 capture and storage (CCS), uses a range of technologies and approaches that isolate, extract, and store carbon dioxide emissions from industrial and energy-related sources in order to prevent the release of it into the atmosphere.”
But why pay for the process when it’s free? Earth’s naturally sequestered carbon is eventually converted to coal, oil and natural gas. It’s all part of a greater symbiotic process which made life on Earth possible in the first place. CO2 = Oxygen = Life.
For the development of animals, nothing—with the exception of DNA—may be more important than oxygen in the atmosphere.
Oxygen enables the chemical reactions that animals use to get energy from stored carbohydrates—from food. So it may be no coincidence that animals appeared and evolved during the “Cambrian explosion,” which coincided with a spike in atmospheric oxygen roughly 500 million years ago.
It was during the Cambrian explosion that most of the current animal designs appeared.
In green plants, photosynthesis separates carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen (which is released to the atmosphere), and carbon (which is stored in carbohydrates).
But photosynthesis had already been around for at least 2.5 billion years. So what accounted for the sudden spike in oxygen during the Cambrian?
A study now online in the February issue of Earth and Planetary Science Letters links the rise in oxygen to a rapid increase in the burial of sediment containing large amounts of carbon-rich organic matter. The key, says study co-author Shanan Peters, a professor of geoscience at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is to recognize that sediment storage blocks the oxidation of carbon.
Without burial, this oxidation reaction causes dead plant material on Earth’s surface to burn. That causes the carbon it contains, which originated in the atmosphere, to bond with oxygen to form carbon dioxide. And for oxygen to build up in our atmosphere, plant organic matter must be protected from oxidation.
And that’s exactly what happens when CO2 and organic matter—the raw material of coal, oil and natural gas—is buried through NATURAL geologic processes.
Natural CO2 Sequestration provides us with FREE carbon based energy which, when used, is naturally recaptured as CO2 and naturally sequestered through ocean sediment to eventually for natural coal, oil and natural gas. FREE FREE FREE
OMG! “Ocean Cleanup’s Plastic Catcher Is Busted. So What Now?”
Not to worry. Plastic is material consisting of any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds. An organic compound is generally any chemical compound that contains carbon. Plastics migrating to the oceans through LITTERING will eventually be swept up and sequestered naturally and eventually show up millions of years later as “fossil fuel.
Obviously people didn’t turn down the thermostat and wear extra clothing. People expect snow to be plowed out of their way. Work to do, bills to pay.
Throw in a carbon tax and the government will have more money to play with.
