US presidents rarely look to make waves with speeches to the annual United Nations General Assembly, but President Joe Biden’s nearly 40-minute talk Tuesday actually challenged global leaders … to stay awake.
The world, Biden lectured, needs to “act together.” This is a “decisive decade.” We must work to prevent pandemics and fight climate change. “We stand at an inflection point in history,” have a “shared future” and can only meet “the challenges” we face by … “looking to the future.”
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Biden also worked in his domestic slogans — his “Build Back Better” theme made a prominent appearance.
But mostly it was empty claims like: We’re “rebuilding alliances,” he insisted, even as allies across the world are furious at being shut out of the planning that produced his disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
And after France just withdrew its US ambassador in protest after Biden announced a security deal with Australia that sank a $66 billion plan for the French to sell Canberra 12 submarines.
We’ve re-engaged with the World Health Organization, the prez also boasted — and never mind that organization’s cooperation with China’s COVID cover-up.
Biden stressed the need for “relentless diplomacy” to replace “relentless war,” as if one party could choose negotiations when the other opts for force. America, he vowed, will return to showing deference to international bodies like the United Nations.
“We’re back at the table,” he promised. In other words, US interests will again take a back seat to whatever the world body’s thugs and corruptocrats prefer. He even means to restore the Iran nuclear deal.
No surprise there: Pretending that Iran’s terror-sponsoring regime will truly abandon its drive to become a nuclear power is no more absurd than Biden’s belief that the Taliban may run Afghanistan as a peace-loving, rights-honoring good global citizen.
Never mind that Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, is a hardliner and mass killer.
And even if Tehran could be trusted to honor the 2015 nuclear pact (which President Donald Trump wisely ditched), or any new deal like it, that pact was fatally flawed: It didn’t restrict Iran’s development of missiles (which could deliver nukes), its sponsorship of terrorism or its military aggression throughout the region.
Worse, it actually paved the way for Iran to “legally” go nuclear in just a few years. Tehran also collected billions up-front, and will surely demand more to give Biden even a pretense of a deal.
The worst world leaders surely loved Biden’s blather (if they didn’t nod off), while America’s friends frantically try to figure out how to handle the leadership vacuum in Washington.

And to the best of my knowledge, the Iranians haven’t even bought any of Hunter B.’s “paintings” – as yet.
