BBC Weather forecasters expect a cold weather system to target Britain with heavy snowfalls and rain showers on Easter Monday.
BBC Weather meteorologist Ben Rich warned an area of low pressure could unleash fresh snow on large parts of the UK causing travel disruption to Britons traveling during the Easter Bank Holiday.
Mr. Rich said: “This area of low pressure bringing this frontal system northwards across the country and, as the front runs into some pretty cold air, there is a potential for a spell of snow.
“There is still some uncertainty about this bit: it looks like parts of mid-Wales, the Midlands northwards we’ll see some snow for a time. Quite a lot of snow potentially for Northern England and Northern Ireland.”
Overnight temperatures could sink to -10C (14F) in parts bringing harsh frosts and icy roads as daytime highs hover below average, experts warn.
Parts of Britain are braced for power cuts, loss of mobile phone signals and disruption to public services due to the weather.
The BBC Weather forecaster continued: “There is the potential for some disruption but as milder air pushes in from the South it is likely to be mainly wet weather in the south-west.
“With the risk of some snow, there could be some travel disruption on Easter Monday. Stay tuned to the forecast.”
The threat of snow pushed the Met Office to issue a yellow warning for snow extending from the north of London all the way up to Northern England and Southern Scotland.
The Met Office with Publish Health England (PHE) have put out a level-2 ‘alert and readiness’ cold weather health caution – rare at this time of year – until Tuesday, April 3.
Meteorologist Martin Bowles said: “In terms of the forecast, Monday has clearly changed and there is now more of a risk of snowfall.
“Model runs have changed from earlier in the week and there could now be quite a bit of snow in some places; the latest models have picked up a strong risk for snow.
“Where there are impacts from this they could be significant and we could see snow to low levels for a time.”
