Passing the Build Back Better Act will spell the end of oil use worldwide, Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey claimed at a Wednesday press conference.
“The oil era will be over if we pass the reconciliation package,” Markey said, adding that increasing the use of green energy will decrease the power of Russia and Saudi Arabia.
“If we’re afraid of Russia’s agenda right now, Saudi Arabia’s control over our foreign policy in the Middle East, there’s one sure and certain thing that we can do and it’s over the next month. And that is to make sure that we have both of those countries and others like them, on a pathway to bankruptcy.”
“We will be able to say to each and every one of those countries that business as usual has ended.”
Markey, a sponsor of the Green New Deal, argued that passing the climate provisions in the Build Back Better Act is a “matter of life and death.”
He also slammed oil companies for raising prices in response to supply-chain interruptions and a decrease in their stocks. Gas prices have increased by $1.50 year over year.
“Right now, oil companies are taking American consumers and shaking them upside down at gas pumps all across our country, while simultaneously sending a signal to the Republican Party to kill Build Back Better, to kill a transition to all-electric vehicles, to plug-in hybrids, to battery storage technologies, that will lead inexorably, inevitably to the demise of those companies controlling the agenda of our nation,” he added.
At the COP26 United Nations climate conference, President Joe Biden blamed nations in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for price increases.
Critics argue that Biden’s energy policies, including shutting down the Keystone XL pipeline and banning fracking and oil drilling on public lands, have caused the energy crisis.
To punish oil companies and OPEC countries for not drilling, Markey urged Biden to release the U.S.’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The reserve, a government facility containing 714 million barrels of oil, can be deployed to stabilize gas prices.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki has claimed that high oil prices are evidence that more left-wing energy policies are needed.
“The rise in gas prices over the long term makes an even stronger case for doubling down our investment and our focus on clean energy options,” she said at her Nov. 12 press conference.

Hi Randy. Both of your comments are completely correct. What you explained is also starting to happen here in Australia. Our coal power stations are old, we haven’t built a new one for decades but as you will expect, millions have been spent (by carpetbaggers) on windmills and solar farms in return for tax payer subsidies. They cannot lose while consumers pay heaps more for electricity.
Looking into Australia’s energy production of the future, there is no plan at all. Our Energy Minister has committed the federal government to only one gas power station to cover for renewables, but there is nothing to replace what coal produces every cloudy day and night – which is over 98% of electricity distributed.
If more people don’t wake up to the garbage story about climate change, western countries will suffer unimaginable hardship, which we are getting an early glimpse of today in the US with shortages and massive price increases.
Folks like Ed Markey have NO IDEA what they are talking about. Let me “Clue In” the Green New Dealers: 1.) Gasoline prices are up domestically as a result of SUPPLY shortages worldwide. The LACK of industry investment, starting in 2014, is what has created the shortages now that economies are emerging from COVID. 2.) Biden & Co. misguided & uninformed domestic energy policies will START coming into effect NEXT YEAR. The “chill” cast upon domestic producers by tax policies, financial (lending) constraints, regulatory burdens & increasing lack of access to leasing opportunities will only drive domestic production DOWN, increasing oil imports. 3.) Does Ed Markey understand that electricity is ONLY 20% of domestic primary energy consumption? Hydrocarbons will continue to be an ESSENTIAL part of the energy transition for the next 30 years (or more). Don’t believe me, just go out to the EIA website and look at the governments own projections. 4.) WIND & SOLAR are NOT the technologies of the future. Modular nuclear & fusion (ultimately) are the CLEAN, scalable sources of base load power to energize a future (reliable) electric grid. Wasting BILLIONS of dollars of taxpayer money on renewables has to be one of the DUMBEST ideas ever. I could go on, but this is complete GARBAGE! The U.S electorate better wake up in the 2022 mid-terms. Otherwise, these ideologues will drive the U.S economy & energy system right off a cliff…
