Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez directed her ire at Republicans after historic flash flooding ravaged the nation’s capital Monday.
Washington D.C. saw 2.79 inches of rain in just one hour, topping the 1945 record of 2.05 inches in the same time period, according to The Washington Post.
The freshman Democratic congresswoman appeared to blame Republican support for the fossil fuel industry for the flooding.
“Unprecedented flooding is quickly becoming a new normal,” she tweeted. “Despite that, Republicans are tripling down on fossil fuels w/no plan to transition off them, or make the critical infra investments we need to prep for the climate crisis.”

“Climate change intensifies flooding, wildfires, & extreme weather. It’s more than 1 day or 1 storm; it’s all of them. Places are flooding where they haven’t before; there are 90-degree days in Alaska in June. The GOP will mock & sow confusion until it’s their home swept away,” she continued in a second tweet.

Ocasio-Cortez did not elaborate on her claims or explain how fossil fuels and Monday morning’s historic flooding were related, but this is not the first time that she has blamed weather calamities on her political opponents.
Earlier this year, Ocasio-Cortez blamed a tornado warning in D.C. on the nation’s “climate crisis” — which she believes Republicans are not doing enough to combat — in an Instagram post.
“The climate crisis is real y’all,” Ocasio said. “guess we’re at casual tornadoes in growing regions of the country?”
Ocasio-Cortez has also suggested that the world could be doomed if the issue of climate change is not addressed in the next 12 years, and has proposed a “Green New Deal” in order to deal with climate change.

(U) The case for unprecedented flooding in many areas is purely anecdotal. You have to look at the weather records for any location to determine if rainfall is truly changing in intensity, frequency, etc. What is really happening in many of these places where urban flooding is very prominant is that, continued development, paving, and expansion into suburbs increases run-off dramatically. When rainwater has nowhere into the ground to go, it flows downhill, most often toward places where people are. Don’t blame the weather, don’t blame the climate, don’t blame the conservatives . . . blame the planners who let unfettered development ruin the countryside. It’s not a political issue, it’s one of basic intelligence.
