Last night freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram to build Ikea furniture, drink wine, and eat snacks while waxing philosophical on the perils of climate change.
Even in today’s strange world, where presidential candidates like Beto O’Rourke post photos of themselves at the dentist, this was a bizarre display.
The oddest moment came when Ocasio-Cortez compared those who oppose her Green New Deal, or at least some kind of aggressive fight against climate change, to people in the 1950s and 1960s who opposed civil rights for black Americans.
To those who make jokes about her claim that we have 12 years to save the world Ocasio-Cortez said, “you may laugh, but your grandkids will not.” That’s when the threats started. While chewing a snack live on Instagram she reminded us that:
The internet documents everything. You know, you want to look about, you want to talk about looking at the back of history, looking backwards, you look back and you open history books on the civil rights movement, and you see those folks who are protesting against the ability for African Americans and black Americans to have the right to vote, and they would hold up these bigoted signs, and they would hold up signs that said things like ‘what about white rights,’ and all of this stuff, in the 1950s, 1960s.
So just know that in the present day there a lot of people who hide the fact that their families and their grandparents fought against the principles of equal rights in the United States. Not 100 years ago, not 80 years ago, but in this generation’s lifetime.
So just know that while a lot of people can hide what their grandparents did that in the civil rights movement, you should also know that the internet documents everything.
And your grandchildren will not be able to hide the fact that you fought against acknowledging and taking bold action against climate change.

The internet does indeed document everything, including this bizarre diatribe. The casual nature with which she berates conservatives, who likely weren’t among the 8,000 viewers anyway, is troubling.
She appears to take quite seriously the idea that our grandchildren will be ashamed of us if we don’t support her political policies because they will have access to our tweets or something. It’s frankly a maniacal imagining.
The year 2060: having failed to heed AOC’s warnings that the world is on fire, little Johnny is in tears, shame burning through him as he peruses grandma’s Facebook page from 40 years ago.
The inescapable political comparison to make to Ocasio-Cortez has always been to Donald Trump. Since her recent rise to prominence, many observers, myself included, have pointed this out.
It is clearest in the penchant that both have for unfiltered, off-the-cuff internet postings, often tinged with anger.
In addition, both frame things as dire emergencies that we have no choice but to address with their preferred policy positions.
Much like Trump, AOC appears to be her own communications team, this can be a good thing, but also comes with pitfalls.
For over two years Republicans have shuddered to open Twitter for fear of what the president might have tweeted about. Entire news cycles or even congressional negotiations can be scuttled with 280 characters.
Now Democrats are experiencing a similar kind of fear. For reasons that are not yet entirely fathomable, she, like Trump, has become the most prominent and dynamic voice of her party. But it’s a voice the party can’t control.
There is one key difference between Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Donald Trump. Trump has been a celebrity for nearly half a century. AOC has been a celebrity for a bit more than six months.
Fame and adoration, as much as many people seek them, can be dangerous things. They can alter the mind and one’s perception of oneself. Many who are thrust into such a situation have a great deal of trouble dealing with it.
It is unclear why Ocasio-Cortez thought it was a good idea to pour a drink, turn on the camera and invite the world into her apartment last night. Perhaps it was all planned, part of a strategy to make her more relatable.
But it doesn’t seem that way; it didn’t feel prepared or purposive. But, as she said herself, AOC is the boss now. These video streams of her life in the evenings appear to be becoming a new norm.
For more conventional Democrats, this is a worry and one that they can’t control. The only question is whether she can control it.

The picture looks like the moment where AOC has secured a book deal and is killing herself laughing that people have actually taken her 12 years till the planet ends seriously . With only 12 years until the end of the world, what is the point of kids going to school? Drop out of high school, hit your credit card limit and then commit suicide. It simply isn’t worth living knowing you will die a horrible painful death in 12 years or less.

I prefer to go back to past apocalyptic predictions. The deadline for them has passed. We didn’t do what the environmental left wanted us to do so we blew it. It is too late. So don’t worry about emissions and live life to the fullest while we can.
AO-C believes that the GND is a cure for everything she feels is wrong with Western society.
Materialism, inequality , gluttony, pollution, discrimination, health care, education, etc..
Does she also believe that we are willing to lower our expectations of prosperity? That we’d take a vow of poverty as the path to contentment?
The GND is a formula for mass grumpiness. Every politician knows what that means at election time.
It is interesting that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez compared those opposing her radical agenda to the people who opposed the civil rights movement. This movement did not result in equal treatment for all as was the theory. The result in reality is the most massive system of discrimination in US history. It is called affirmative action and is practice by essentially all major cooperations. It is impossible to select for one group without discriminating against others. Anyone who doubts that affirmative action is discrimination needs to apply the test of reverse roles. If we had a system where the major cooperations all had programs of affirmative action for whites but no one else, would that be discrimination? Except for a very few cases, the discrimination that we have now is in spite of the constitutional right of equal protection under the law. If the victim is white, this is ignored.
The victims of the Green New Deal wouldn’t be based on race, but would be those in the middle class and below and elderly. More would be victims and the impact would be much greater. With no fossil fuels electric cars and public transportation would be the only options. In most places pubic transportation takes two to three times longer. In some places like where I live are so remote public transportation will never be available. Paying the taxes to support the Green New Deal socialist programs would mean only the elite could afford electric cars. Food would be very expensive with no fossil fuels for agriculture, and long power outages common because there is no feasible means to store power for when the renewables are not available. I can imagine students working on a report by candle light hoping their computer’s battery will last. With energy scarce and expensive many companies would close down.
The true impact of the civil rights movement has and the impact that the GND would both results in millions of victims.
It was in the 1960’s, the government came out with an edict that businesses must hire blacks – to make up 10% of their employees. I was working for an oil exploration outfit based in Pasadena CA. We needed a field engineer – qualified in electronics – and able to go and work anywhere in the world on short notice. One gentleman was found, living with his girlfriend and seven children in a canyon above Alta Dena. When told what the monthly salary was, he explained that Aid to Families with Dependent Children was paying much more than that – “No thanks.” We tried…..
There are a number of things that can be said about this. If the government had mandated that whites be hired, would that be discrimination? If the answer is yes, then it was discrimination to mandate that blacks be hired.
This potential employee was living with his girlfriend. Unlike a wife, his salary would not have stopped his girlfriend from receiving welfare. His income would have been added to that of the family. He was too lazy to do it and was content to be a parasite.
No consider the massive expansion of welfare under the Green New Deal. This would add to the number of people on welfare and make it difficult or impossible for employers to fill low end jobs.
AO-C is the Left’s wunderkind.
She has absorbed and organized everything she has been taught. She won election on her first attempt ( displacing an established Democrat, oops ). Female, minority, media savvy.
