At an annual conference, student body presidents from each of the Big 10 schools unanimously agreed to a resolution calling on those institutions to divest from fossil fuels.
According to the Climate Action Movement, a student, faculty, and alumni group at the University of Michigan calling on the university to work toward carbon neutrality, the student government leaders agreed to the resolution on January 26.
“This Resolution marks the first instance in which students of a collegiate conference have collectively demanded fossil fuel divestment from their member institutions,” the group noted, acknowledging that the Big 10 schools have a combined 520,000 currently-enrolled students and another 5.7 million alumni who are still alive.
It noted similar actions by the University of California system, as well as Harvard and Yale students.
The University of Michigan student government led the effort in passing the resolution, in which the “Big 10 Student Body Presidents collectively acknowledge the severity of climate change” and “will hereby advocate that their respective institutions commit to ceasing all further investments in the fossil fuel industry…in FY2020” and “call on the leadership of their respective institutions to commit to research and action towards future divestment from the fossil fuel industry in FY2020.”
It’s unclear whether any of the Big 10 schools will actually divest from fossil fuels.
UMich President Mark Schlissel, in a statement to the Michigan Daily, said, “the fact that both CSG and then collectively the equivalent bodies all across the Big Ten made a statement about this, I think is important. I think we have to, you know, hear the student voice and you know, respect it and try to understand it.”

Big Green Radicals has a little one about Fracking and those who would oppose it for t he most idiotic reasons i even shows some Eco-Freaks/Hypocricts wearing Green Plastic Hardhats
All electric heating. Wow. That is so efficient (sarcasm). And cost effective too. Even now with relatively low electricity prices. Just wait until costs skyrocket with those “Green” energy producers.
Both my parents and my family bought homes that were only heated with electricity. I added propane for both heat and hot water and on average our heating runs just a little over a $100 a month. My father never added a more economical form of heat and his bills were running $700 a month. Now consider that by adding renewables to one third of their energy mix Germany tripled their power rate. That would translate to $2,100 a month and everyone would be paying that kind of cost since fossil fuels going away would mean no propane, fuel oil, or natural gas. Now consider that Germany’s high costs have been only for having on third renewables and now costs are in an upward spiral as they attempt to further decrease their emissions. The cost of heating for a home like my fathers would be much more than $2,100 a month. It is no wonder that people are dying because they can’t heat their homes to adequate levels.
Divestment does nothing. It’s a proven fact, there are plenty of investors willing to buy up the shares when they become available.
Cut these 10 schools and student’s/ teacher’s homes from the evil fossil fuel and see how long imbeciles would survive in the winter.
I agree let them see the real world of life without Fossil Fuels of any kind these morons need a lesson they wont learn in their liberal written Text Books let them see the consiqences of heir own Eco-Stupidity
Students have no right to tell the universities that they attend what to do.
As I have said many times, if something of value is sold, some will buy it. Selling off fossil fuel stocks can not have any kind of impact except to make a statement. If anyone really wants to get rid of their stocks, I’ll gladly accept them as a donation.
The fact that university students are some so dumb as to think selling stocks can have an impact in addition to being so dumb to believe in the climate change fraud, means the future of this country is very bleak as such people take on adults responsibilities.
If they consider it immoral to profit from the production of conventional fuels, then they should also eschew the benefits of burning them. No uber. Walk, don’t hitchhike. Don’t use or eat anything that was on a truck, train or plane.
I’ll bet that you’ll get over your idealism inside of 24 hours.
Just like the bursar at the British university offered, just turn off the heating in the dorms of the protesters. And don’t sell them any gasoline for their cars, and don’t let ’em charge their phones & devices. They can see this as a field lesson in carbon divestment.
Well, the all those researchers at those Big 10 institutions better be REAL BUSY trying to develop a clean, scalable & sustainable alternative to replace 80% of our primary energy. Otherwise, the quality of their lives may just take a “dip” without fossil fuels…
Then let the Student Body Presidents suffer the from their own ignorance and stupidity when they return to a cold and empty home and have to walk for miles and eat raw foot their Ignorance is sticking out like sore thumb
