Bruce Knipp (letter, “Freedom of the press no longer exists,” May 20) makes some interesting observations about how the press has been co-opted to advance sinister agendas that damage Americans. This is particularly evident and egregious in the global warming discussion.
Beyond slanting the news, some newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times established official policy disallowing publication of any opinion not conforming to the extreme alarmist view of global warming. With the theory of catastrophic man-made global warming in near total collapse, the only thing keeping it alive is intense political propaganda … and the media are eagerly complicit.
An early 20th century master of evil propaganda taught us that for the “big lie” to be successful, “It must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.” Lack of truth is irrelevant. (You know… “global warming is man-made,” “it’s dangerous,” “the science is settled,” “97 percent of scientists agree” … all of which are demonstrably untrue.) You can look up this principle in Adolph Hitler’s manifesto, Mein Kampf.
Earlier in the 20th century, H.L. Mencken noted that, “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”
Loss of a free press is the prerequisite to loss of a free and democratic society. If we are to avoid this, we must demand better of our media outlets.
